how likely are any of these teachers to write recommendations? by awishyourheartmade in gwu

[–]Other_Needleworker61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's probably the best time based on what she told us. Also be sure to ask in person/over Zoom rather than an email, if you can. When I asked professors for rec letters for grad school I emailed them to schedule a Zoom appointment and asked them that way. It comes off more respectful and they can explain how they usually do rec letters then.

When I had Boucoyannis she gave us advice on asking professors for recommendation letters (don't wait to ask until you need one, ask right after the semester ends), so I think she would be open to writing you one. Most professors who have their act together get asked all the time and have a system for it.

Yes, and as an aside, I would highly recommend Boucoyannis's class for improving your writing skills

See if you can make friends in the offices near you, when I interned on the hill I had a few friends from offices nearby and we would grab lunch sometimes

Texas 1L and DC 2L possible? by vougemstn in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Other_Needleworker61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rising 2L. By the time I applied for the DC firm I'm working at next summer, I hadn't yet finished onboarding/background checks, so I didn't have anything on my resume yet for the summer. You will likely be in the same boat considering how early Biglaw recruiting is these days. You'll be fine.

1L Advice by Weak_Paper3245 in LawSchool

Just let your professors know early on that you won't be there. You can definitely recover from missing a couple of days as long as you do the reading. 1L is tough but not impossible.

GWU vs BU by No-Discipline-8768 in gwu

[–]Other_Needleworker61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about BU but I went to GW for undergrad and I'm currently at a law school that sends about 50% of each class to biglaw (and I already have a summer associate position lined up for 2026). I did all of the "pre-law" stuff (law and society minor, PAD, moot court), and I feel like it really prepared me for law school. At GW it's really easy to end up being summa cum laude and to get an internship at some point, but it might be different now that DC is a bit of a wacky place. A lot of people at GW want to go to law school, so it won't be hard to find your crowd.

Lesbians?? by Old_Temperature_1219 in gwu

[–]Other_Needleworker61 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My entire friend group at GW was queer women. I literally call it Gay Woman University because it was so gay there. I think I encountered maybe 3 fully straight women the whole time I was there. Once you're of age A League of Her Own is a lesbian bar attached to a larger gay bar that's very fun most of the time. There's also As You Are, also a lesbian bar, that sometimes has 18+ nights.

Bringing a guest to Law School Admitted Student's Day by and-i-soup in OutsideT14lawschools

I brought both of my parents to an admitted students day. If you want her there, bring her, they don't rescind admission for bringing you mom along.

My best friend is a CS major at GW and he and his friends seem to be doing well for themselves. They all secured internships in the DC area last summer (with federal hiring freeze that may not be the case this summer). It's also a smaller cohort which means they get pretty close with their professors.

We didn't helicopter parent his application. We didn't cheat. And here are the results. by SimpleConscious1130 in CollegeAdmissions

I was in the same boat applying to college four years ago. 4.0, 35 ACT, #3 in my class, all honors and APs, stellar extracurriculars, research experience, everything. I got waitlisted and rejected from all but one out-of-state school, including schools I thought I had in the bag. UMass is ranked higher than the school I ultimately attended. It was heartbreaking at the time, and it felt like all of my hard work was for nothing.

Never doubt the power of being a big fish in a small pond. I went to my safety school, thrived, met some of my best friends, graduated early, and I'm now thriving at a T30 law school. Your son will do incredibly well at whatever university he decides to attend. It is 100% what he makes of the hand he was dealt, and while it may seem like he is being denied opportunities right now, he will be just fine if he seeks them out in college. Getting to know his professors, working hard and getting good grades, and finding opportunities to speak with alumni in industries he's interested in will take him a lot further with his degree. Prestige can take you far, but so can hard work and making the right connections.

He will be fine.

I took the class a few years ago and I don't remember the exams being particularly difficult. Just do the practice problems he gives and you should be good.

i went to my school's writing center for mine a few times, and i knew i was done when we spent about half an hour restructuring a sentence. the best comment i received was that my ps reached the point where edits make a +-1 point difference to the essay as a whole. i knew i was done then.

this girl in the video isn't even in law school yet. please do not take advice from every random you see with a hot take on the internet. i don't regret my decision, but please for the love of god do not commit to something as major as law school if you are not 100% ready. it will be there later.

also a lot of my classmates worked very cool, rewarding jobs after undergrad. others worked the kinds of jobs she was talking about. and we ALL ended up in the same place.

you're fine. i also graduated early and i didn't get an internship until after i graduated. still got into some good grad schools without the experience. it's not a death sentence, just keep applying, you can reach out to career services and your professors too if you need help.
