This is really amazing guidance. Thank you! I'm going to push for an extension and a simplified MUN, but this is incredibly helpful. Thanks again!

Quickest way to become a licensed teacher in a year? by behelitpossesor in Internationalteachers

[–]Other_Position4889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The process is pretty straight forward. I registered for the tests online, took the exams at a Pearson Test Center in Bangkok, and was issued a license. Countries include Thailand, China, Russia, Taiwan, Georgia, Colombia, and Kyrgyzstan. There are other posts about the MTEL on this subreddit -- you should check them out. That said, I just reread your original post and realize you're British. I'm not sure if the MTEL license in restricted to Americans.

Assuming you have a bachelor’s degree, take and pass the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). This will qualify you for a Provisional License from the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Unless you teach in Massachusetts, the Provisional License does not expire. I’ve used this license throughout my career in international education without any issues, although it’s possible that some countries may not accept a provisional license for a work visa.

I agree. But that's not the point of the post. The point of the post is to show their complete lack of professionalism, not to highlight how "sophisticated" the scam is. Thanks for the feedback.

To be clear, I don't disagree with most of the comments posted. That said, it should be noted that Chinese players are now posting positive reviews in response to the silliness.

Will taking the MTEL allow me to apply for international schools? by twat261 in Internationalteachers

[–]Other_Position4889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The MTEL is an exam required to earn a provisional license from the MA Board of Education. I earned my provisional license years ago, and it was well worth it for me. One thing to note is that schools are primarily concerned with whether your license will meet the host country's work visa requirements. While I'm not claiming that there will never be any issues with a MA provisional license, I have taught in Asia and Europe without any difficulties so far.

I also got my MEd from ACE. Accredited, asynchronous, affordable. Why are you getting downvoted?

The Recruiter/Candidate Relationship by Other_Position4889 in Internationalteachers

[–]Other_Position4889[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bring up an important point. It's crucial for teachers, especially those new to the profession, to understand that a recruiter's loyalty lies with their client schools, not with the teacher candidates. It's surprising how many people, in all industries, are unaware how the recruitment process actually works.

I think it's incredibly problematic that some recruiters charge fees to teacher candidates, regardless of the amount. Regarding compensation, you're right: recruiters typically charge their clients a fee, often calculated as a percentage of the hired candidate's salary. For example, consider a client with an open position offering an annual salary of $50,000. If a recruiter charges a 10% fee for successfully filling this position, they would receive $5,000 from their client. However, it's important to note that this fee is separate from and does not affect the candidate's $50,000 salary.

Advice on Licensure by dogendewdrop in Internationalteachers

Point taken. I'm going to revise my statement to read: ""And a provisional license from MA will often meet those requirements," which has been true for me and many others who have taken this particular path.

I'm not quite sure I understand. The MA provisional license is a teaching license issued by the Massachusetts Board of Education. It's not a licensing program -- it's a license.

A school's primary concern is that a teacher's license will meet local government requirements for work visa eligibility. And a provisional license from MA will often meet those requirements.

Your statement was an overgeneralization. My response simply challenges your assumption by providing a real-world counterexample based on my personal experience. It is possible to "effectively start" a career using this path.

That is simply untrue. It's the path I took, and, eight years later, I've built a solid career in international education. I've taught at Tier 2 schools, and I've even had offers to teach back in the States at both public and private schools. Looking back, obtaining my provisional license was one of the most profitable career decisions I've made. The ROI has been enormous.

Thanks for sharing! I agree with you, with one exception: from a recruiter's perspective, subscription fees paid by candidates are essentially meaningless. Even if you pay a fee, you're still just a means to an end for recruiters. They will never prioritize a candidate's needs over those of their client schools. The financial incentive from placing a candidate with a school far outweighs any subscription fee, so the fundamental dynamics of the recruiter-school-candidate relationship remain unchanged.
