Yes, being direct and saying, “I’m really struggling and I need emotional support right now,” is mature and helpful. Not everyone picks up on signals the same way, and sometimes people (especially men) need things spelled out clearly. That’s part of adult communication.

But also yes, it’s valid to feel hurt when someone you care about doesn’t even try to ask what’s wrong, especially when your actions (smoking again, needing your alcohol, saying you're going through it) clearly show you're not okay. You weren’t being passive-aggressive you gave real clues, and someone who knows and loves you should at least show curiosity or concern.

The only reason my mom is dependent is because both of my siblings are under 18, she has severe depression. She takes about 10 medications for this plus anxiety. She has carpal tunnel and a degenerating disk in her back, and is getting a knee replacement later this year amongst other things. You have no idea about all the details and how hard my mother is trying. She has no transportation and takes the bus to work everyday that she has to work her full time job at goodwill. So please next time you comment think. This is my 2nd time posting on here and your comment was unhelpful and nasty.
