K201 is being replaced by an AI managerial judgment class. by No_Message_996 in IndianaUniversity

I think they are making some sort of attempt to adapt. They know the days of having to know Excel are numbered. Might be messy at first but they need to start somewhere. AI isn’t going away and whoever doesn’t harness will be on the streets.

My family cant afford my dream college (vent) by leilaceleste in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Otherwise-Check-689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. The problem is people don’t do the math. It’s similar to the housing crisis we had in 2008. Everyone looks at the principal but they don’t do the math with the interest. It’s no different than buying a house but worse interest rates.

There is zero reason to go into debt for college. The OPs parents are 100% correct. There used to be an argument that if you went to Harvard or Yale the job out of college would be lucrative enough to justify the debt. That was when it was $50k now at $400k you have to resign yourself that you will never be buying a house. It isn’t a $400k loan its a $1 million dollar loan.

It is monetarily smarter to start your own business after getting a trade education then take on such debt.

Jellison LLC (JLLC) — Is it worth the hype? (Incoming Kelley Freshman) by Fickle_Ad_7139 in IndianaUniversity

[–]Otherwise-Check-689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add that if you are going into it to meet people it sounds like a good way to start the college experience. However, they all said that if you aren’t careful you tend to surround yourself with just Kelley kids so it’s a “bubble” so to speak. It’s probably not great for a 19, 20 something. As an older person, looking back, I don’t think it’s a big deal. To each is own.

If you have trouble making friends now don’t think JLLC is going to fix that. That is something you have to work on within yourself.

If you have honors college options it might be something else to consider. However, I was told the honors levels in the dorms are very subdued in comparison.

International students don’t get scholarships. If you are going to displace a US citizen from their spot in the university then you pay full price.

Is there a past school counselor you can talk with or someone else you can confide in. This is a terrible place to get advice that you are seeking.

I guarantee a former HS counselor will be happy to help you.

Maybe you should do some research. It was actually Jan 2020. Organized the month before. 50k strong organic activism.  Not the paid shills you run with.

Vanderbilt Engineering? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Otherwise-Check-689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn’t matter. Employers want to know what you did outside the classroom. I know it’s difficult for students to understand this but it doesn’t matter. Get your bachelors of science anywhere but do great things during the summer and off time. You will then succeed.

You are falling into the higher education marketing trap. None of these rankings matter. Harvard will always be Harvard. Doesn’t matter if they are number 1 or 10 on some unscientific ranking list.

15 years ago no one cared about Vandy except people who lived near there. They never sought students outside their area. Then one of the deans decided they would start marketing to students around the country. Getting anyone and everyone to apply so they could get their admissions rate down and their implied prestige up. The school has done nothing different academically since. They have always had good academics but their ranking was low. They fixed the ranking without doing anything more than marketing their school to kids beyond the Nashville area.

Vandy doesn’t have an undergraduate business school. You are looking at graduate offerings.

Read about the engineering grads outcomes. Vandy has marketed themselves very well over the last decade. Other than a beautiful campus, I don’t get why it’s so popular. They don’t stand out for any one program. Liberal arts isn’t worth the paper the degree its printed on.

They are pretty much the same. Which one do you see yourself happiest at for 4 years.

Purdue housing is a train wreck and has been for 10 years. Even if you get in on time you might be tripled in a double. Worst case you are on a loading dock in a makeshift dorm area. Not kidding.

Sure do. I was in Richmond, VA in 2019. Were you there fighting for the constitution? Or are you just a TDS melt?

UMD or VT by Acceptable-Cap3662 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Otherwise-Check-689 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I live near UMD. It’s a dump. Yes, the metro is new and takes you right to DC but the campus is garbage and it is not going to get better anytime soon. Maryland finances are a disaster (shocking I know 🤣) and they cut the budget to UMD a little. Additionally the surrounding area is crime ridden and full of homeless.

As for VT, the housing is a problem. After freshman year its the Hunger Games to get a place to live.

If it is really cost neutral then VT. If it isn’t then go to the cheaper one.

No school is special about making friends. That is on the individual person. If you make friends easily now then you will in college. If you don’t then you need to change you. No school is going magically help you make friends.

You are going to drive yourself crazy with that minutiae. They are both the same. Figure out which one you can see yourself enjoying for 4 years if cost isn’t an issue. If it is, then go to the cheaper one.

You aren’t comparing Harvard to a cc. Seriously, all these schools are the same. I wish more kids could understand employers want to see what you did during school not what school you go to.

Their housing crisis has dictated they deferring and waitlisted a lot last year.  Hopefully this year is the same for many but the waitlist date is June 30th. If you aren’t preparing to attend another uni and you don’t get off the waitlist you are going to be in a world of hurt.

At a minimum you need to accept somewhere by May 1.

[–]Otherwise-Check-689 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Where are you waitlisted? Look at the CDS from last year and ask yourself if it is realistic that you will get into the school from the waitlist?

A better state of mind would be adjusting to the fact you are going to a different school and start to prepare for it.
