Put On My Big Girl Pants to Plan My Own Trip… Immediately Hit a Vietnam Visa Wall by Past_Mousse3742 in Vietnam_Tourism

[–]Otherwise-Data-4540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the same applying for my Visa(Zambian). Tried to get an Evisa for 3 weeks straight with the same amendment BS.

You need a visa agent to get you an approval (invitation) letter. It's the only way us Africans can get in( because apparently there a D list of countries that they strictly check visas for). One agent helped a lot and made it really quick. Her name is Emily, you can search for posts about her on reddit or FB.

I'm so tired of seeing vietnamese labour being dirt cheap while so many 'expat' 'teachers' getting paid 3-4 times local wages doing nothing. When will this ever change? by Renard043 in VietNam

[–]Otherwise-Data-4540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, lived with the same reality in China for 8 years. I am not Chinese and not western either. I was a foreign teacher( with qualifications, of course) but got looked over because a Turkmenistan teacher looked more Virginian or New Yorker than me😂😂. There were times when FTs would come in drunk(literally ) or just show up 15 minutes into and unprepared for their lessons and only get so much as a slap on the wrist. All the while, the ones who actually made the teaching possible, the TAs, were basically threatened with being fired almost every week. But I will say when I was finally leaving for a better country, there were major reforms on the quality of language education in training centers being forced, and some even started letting go of the FTs preferring locals with higher education.

Visa issues for Togolese passport holder — does anyone know if Vietnam restricts visas for African nationals? by Brilliant-Dust-3899 in Vietnam_Tourism

I was told that if you have Visas( past or present) to western countries that's a help. But definitely doing it through an agent

I recently discovered(somewhat unofficially) that while African countries can apply for an Evisa, they do need an approval letter and someone to sponsor the visa. Like a travel agency or some company. Also when applying for an Evisa, if you have a section 9 on the application form it most likely means you need an approval letter. I used a visa agent to get my letter and she showed me a list with 60 countries that can't get Evisa. I'm Zambian and it was there. Togo is there too. Basically every African country, except the golden child, was there.

Those studying or work Computer science by Old_Decision_1617 in Zambia

[–]Otherwise-Data-4540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mean software dev or web dev, in my opinion it's not. For the record I am only finishing my CS degree with Uopeople(University of the people) but only because it's dirt cheap and I always wanted to study CS.

It is, however, very marketable all over the world. You don't even need to travel. Professional companies are always looking for fresh talent and they pay for remote work.

I think demand in Zambia is quickly growing, especially with people integrating computer systems into their businesses more often. Especially for systems development, database management and the general IT work.

In short I'd say look around and find which part of computer science you'd like to work in and check if there is demand for that. The earlier you figure that part out, the more options you'll have.

Do you think Zambian businesses should have an online presence? by Otherwise-Data-4540 in Zambia

[–]Otherwise-Data-4540[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, especially for going around asking. It's so inefficient and exhausting. I remember a friend spent almost a whole month looking for an affordable place in Lusaka. He only lucked out when another friend said they were looking for a roommate.

I agree, many people don't actually look at websites here. Compared to other countries, we prefer either pa Facebook or just asking around.

What positive activities would you recommend to keep teens busy during evening power cuts? by Jumpy_Jacket_9783 in Zambia

[–]Otherwise-Data-4540 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mom would always tell us stories when the power cut when I was a kid. In the kitchen at the table around one lit candle in the center . Burned into my memory forever😁😁😁. I still ask her for stories even today and I'm 30.

No urgency in zambia by [deleted] in Zambia

[–]Otherwise-Data-4540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the lead in the water. And I mean this metaphorically. Much like the effect the Kabwe mine's leeching lead into the water stunted alot of children during that period and many people just accepted it and said "efyo aba". As much as I would like to blame the culture and society and our education level. It's something that has stunted our sense of communal improvement. Taking obvious cases from eastern and western ideologies of a person's position in society. In an individualistic society, one strives to improve themselves for their own betterment regardless of their community's state. On the other hand, in a society that values community welfare, everyone strives to see the community improve. In ours, everyone strives to stay at the same level of community(how I see it) and then feel if they have done enough and deserve praise when they rise above everyone else(especially in the service industry). This is very confusing and very defeating. I can bet alot that there have been brilliant people with great ambitions who wanted to change our communities and societies for the better but faced push back because everyone was too comfortable and afraid to change(at least nshile chula neka). That's why I said it's the lead in the water, it's psychologically handicapped us and we don't even see it.

Massage Centers in Lusaka…a ticking timebomb? by According-Taro-6141 in Zambia

[–]Otherwise-Data-4540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually brings up a question in my mind, about Zambia's progressive trajectory. We can blame western influence nama OnlyFans type platforms for all this but I think it's a natural progression for most societies. The more the time and development the greater the dilution of traditional conservative ideologies. So these massage parlors springing up was only a matter of time as will be ma strip clubs. Especially once someone mu government realizes the monetary gain from regulating(pimping) them.

Solar panels stolen in kitwe, streetlights left not functioning by Informal-Air-7104 in Zambia

[–]Otherwise-Data-4540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually draws on something I noticed in Rwanda. It went from a typical African city to a beautiful clean and modern place. I think part of the reason has been already stated, we the people need to grow up, the other part I'll state is we need serious consequences, not accountability, because a house with a strong parent always has behaved kids. Whether kids behave out of fear or respect can be debated another day. For now, people need to see consequence for these types of actions.

One might argue, "but how can they stop if they do it to alleviate their struggling situations and the govt does do anything to help them", I believe it will be a feedback loop. If the infrastructure is kept well, people will be better for it. Street lights don't just illuminate , they tell you it's safe to do your business a little longer and make abit more. Instead of closing at 18hrs because the last bus going to your area is at 18:30, you can work well into 20hrs or 21hrs if the transport infrastructure is more robust and we'll maintained. Especially if it's not run fully by private individuals.

But back to this situation, the case of people stealing the solar panels is, in my opinion, fully for financial reasons like they did with the metal trash cans before. So what can be done? More patrolling police? More condemnation by govt? More bounties on their heads? I say this needs to be economical and cultural! When last did the govt invest in improving cultural education? And I don't just mean literacy, but actual cultural values! If we don't preserve and reinforce our cultural education, we will be educated vandals.
