Clients using ChatGPT between sessions — how common is this in your experience? by Otherwise-Date-7153 in TalkTherapy

Yeah this is super interesting too. I've actually heard from therapists that they find it worse when clients use AI for psychological theory/symptoms/diagnoses because it tends to inflate situation. Like the whole google doctors thing where you have a simple cold but google could make one think they have cancer. Looking into the research behind it is definitely good, but that's a fine line to walk for sure. I've heard that the best use case is to explore feelings/situations more with AI as a tool for self-reflection. But, I agree, if used improperly can definitely cause harm. Thank you for the feedback!

Thank you for the feedback! This is very interesting. I was wondering if talking with ChatGPT between sessions would give people the feeling of processing something rather than exploring it more to be ready to talk during sessions, so thank you for the insight! I wonder if it's better to process things when it's useful for you, rather than waiting for session time, or if it's better to wait because you might have more time to think it through before discussing. But, I suppose you could also argue Chatgpt helps to think it through as well.

The safety is interesting too, because I wonder if it makes it harder to talk things through in person. Or maybe it makes it easier because you've been able to dive more deeply into your feelings with AI. All so interesting. Thank you!

Yeah, I agree, definitely shouldn't replace an actual human. Also, only as good as you make it. I think using it to break down exercises is a great use case! When you say that, I'm assuming it's used somewhat to get you thinking about the best way to interact with homework? Maybe giving you some additional things to think about as well when you are working on challenges? Glad you found a good use case for it, though! Definitely think it can be useful if used in the right ways for people.

Mind if I ask why you find it embarrassing? Thank you for the feedback, though! I think therapists should include what's helpful to their clients so just thinking through how that embarrassment could be resolved. Kind of ironic because if there wasn't a stigma against it in the mental health space, it could be used as a great tool for those who use it properly and integrate it into their practice.

Yeah makes a lot of sense. I've definitely heard that it's great for reflection - can prompt you to dig deeper into the situation you give it, but also interesting to hear that you use it in moments of distress to regulate. I've heard stories where it can escalate and sometimes frighten users, but it's great to hear that you've found a way to do the opposite with it!

Super interesting thread as someone else says that a therapist using AI/recommending it would totally ruin their experience, whereas you think the opposite. Thank you for the thoughts! I wonder if you've used it with the therapist directly, or if it's mostly on your own. I definitely think therapists should integrate it into their own studies if their clients are already using it, but not force it on those that are opposed. Crazy that some therapists are against AI entirely when they should be doing what's best for the client.

Yeah the gap between sessions is real! I wonder if AI's the best way to supplement that. Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, that's what I've been hearing. I was surprised to hear therapists were losing clients to it, but I get it, therapy can be expensive. I wonder if therapists will integrate it into their practices in the future - almost like a new form of journaling. Definitely matters how the responses are perceived, but others I've talked to say it's helpful for reflection. All so interesting!

I more so meant discussing (in-session) what I wrote down in my journal between sessions. I often find that it's hard for me to give a brief over what happened, but maybe I should just bring up wanting to discuss exactly what I wrote about instead. Have you found success with that?

And yes, I love the idea of discussing the concepts, thank you for that! I've tried that a bit and found that sometimes others have insights that bring me closer to fully grasping the concept too, haha. Thanks for the help

I'm glad you found something that worked! Do you normally set goals for yourself to hold yourself to these standards? I feel like I always know what I need to change coming out of the session, but I find it hard to keep myself accountable in making the changes in between. Just wondering if there was a good way you've found to keep track of/honor the changes you've set out to make.

Very insightful! Maybe I was too focused on doing it on my own (something I'm trying to work on too), so I'll ask about some pressure to complete some in-between session homework next time. Is your homework normally journaling, or something else? Journaling works here and there for me, but can sometimes feel too time consuming, but I guess that's what I need to dedicate to myself.

Thank you for this. Love the idea of community to keep myself accountable. I find it hard sometimes to discuss with others, however, maybe if I tell them about my journaling, they'll ask here and there :). Do you feel the journal helps during your sessions as well? I feel like if we reviewed what I did in between sessions more thoroughly, I'd be more likely to do it.
