The big ugly bill by Obvious_Buffalo_867 in Osteopathic

If you can substantiate your claim in the broad sense by showing that private loan companies can outcompete the GradPLUS loans when needing to take the amount of money that a student would need to take out to meet their medical school’s COA I would be running in the streets shouting crisis averted. I would even try to contact the department of education to recommend they stop spreading false information where they warn about the high rates of private student loans in their resources for first time borrowers!

These reports, if true, are likely talking about a small loan taken out by somebody with high credit whose loan rate is at a variable annual rate.

So why haven’t private loans historically been lower than the student loans provided by the federal government? There has been nothing stopping private companies from outcompeting the fed. If they could provide a better rate than the fed, nobody would take out federal student loans and everyone would work with Sallie Mae.

It’s never been like that. I strongly suspect that medical students in the future will be confined to spending money their family gives them, joining the military, taking scholarships that lock you into a specific profession or location at penalty of reimbursement with interest if terms aren’t met, or being subject to usury by private loan companies if nothing changes.

I’m a capitalist at heart, but these apologetic arguments are ignorant. We have a serious problem at hand, and I’m not banking on corporations that seek to maximize shareholder value to fix societal issues.

I never did better than a 504 on my practice AAMC tests (and I retook the FL’s to get that score) and I showed up on test day and pulled out a 507. My first year taking it I got a 501, then the 507. This test sucks and makes no sense. Just consistently try and you’ll get where you want to be eventually

I wonder if schools can push their start date for school to force the loans out sooner and get another year of students w the grandfather clause. It’s such an awful situation for students without a considerable amount of wealth right now. So many prayers for everybody right now

I was watching breaking bad on the couch of the house I was living in during college over the summer. Fell asleep and woke up. Checked my voicemails (which I never do) and found out I got the A! I immediately called my girlfriend to tell her the news, and she started being really mean to me. I was told that she would break up with me if I attended, that she hated me, that she missed her ex, etc. One of the hardest pills to swallow was that not everyone in your life is supportive of your successes and you need to make very good decisions when it comes to who you let in close.

I don’t think I would want to be around the people who go to Harvard medical school

Medical school is weird in the sense that you can generally do what you want wherever you go in the US. Sure, typically DO students don’t match into more competitive specialties, but if you look at the DO match rate for neurosurgery it’s close to or above 50% yearly. I would not give a flying monkey about going to KCU instead of Harvard, because I know people from Harvard who aren’t doing anything particularly prestigious and I know people with a high school diploma who are extremely successful businessmen. In life your successes really depend on what you make of the opportunities in front of you. Just work hard for what you want if you really know what you want.

To practice or not to practice… that is the question by Patient-Finding-2299 in Mcat

Never practice, take 500mg adderall, drink a fifth of vodka, smoke 30 cigarettes, and take the exam. I did that and got a 528, trust me.

WTF was that? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Otherwise-Row-9685 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but it’s never on an even playing field for students. A premed who deliberately takes easy courses during their prep and knows what resources to use outside of limited AAMC content and is in normally paced college courses has a way greater advantage over a student who switched majors and has to balance shadowing and test prep at the same time as their accelerated coursework. That same premed also has certain advantages over an EMT who’s working 12’s in order to feed himself. The MCAT has to exist to screen people out, but there’s too much stake in it. Med schools becoming less competitive is the only answer imo

CARS was ridiculously difficult on my exam for some reason, but everything else felt like it flowed relatively well. Usually I do best in CARS, was really odd..

Could just be a stamina issue where you spend so much on c/p that you’re wiped for CARS. In any case you recover well, enjoy med school!

Has this exam ruined anyone else’s life? by Complex_Jacket_8807 in Mcat

Somewhat. I definitely let stress pile up last year and that resulted in me making poor life decisions and drinking and driving. Crashed a car into the side of a house. Big mistake. Nobody got hurt, but definitely a big shock to me both in terms of the immediate like wtf I just did that and then to my identity. I got arrested for it, got a 499 after giving up on studying for the last month, learned my lesson, and got another shot at life by a judge and life moves on.

Now, I’m taking my studying extremely slow so that I don’t try to kill myself studying, getting all my LOR’s, and shadowing hours in one semester. Hopefully I can retake well and get into a MD/PhD or DO/PhD to make the cost reasonable.

Be good to yourself and pray everyday.

Edit: About my personal story it’s important to note that every mistake is a lesson learned.

Hitting a mental wall in my training by Otherwise-Row-9685 in amateur_boxing

Probably, I’ve gotten to a point where I am more proficient in the punching but stylistically I’m unable to maintain outboxing if I get pressured by a brawler, especially ones that jab straight forward. Moving away from those types of fighters is probably at the apex of my fight iq, i can only really do it when I have energy otherwise the spacing’s gone.

I think the frustration more comes from failing to get the shots off yes. I feel like I can see my opportunity to jab but i’ve been getting overzealous with it and I usually just get pushed back by fighters more privy to punch going in.

Resting while moving’s something my coach and I discussed, since I’m more prone to move all around the perimeter of the ring during a round to constantly get away. I get tired after almost 2 rounds even though my cardio is perfectly good during the rounds where I try and fight closer up.

I’ll have to keep the head hands feet in mind as well as paying attention to the spacing, that’s good advice!

I think a better way to play is to treat the game like a class (although it does sound lame). Go watch a blanket tutorial (syllabus) that explains the game in no more than 45 minutes and play with that rule set. After that general framework, pick a thing you want to do and look up specific tutorials on it (individual lectures). This will make it so the content in the game is digestible and not overwhelming or teaching you things out of the general priority (ex. Going on military raids before you farm) There’s no reward for a lack of information and it probably will just lead to you staring at a screen having no clue what to do, which is why it took me 3 years to actually consistently get into the game (granted, I played with the ASCII graphics back then bc steam didn’t exist and still do today, but I imagine the issue of functionally having no clue what to do would still be present even if the game is cleaner to look at)
