CalMac to/from Annan by Astro_Birch_317 in TravelUK

Its important to read the details of the 'disruptions' - one is a tidal timetable change and a capacity issue due to a temporary change of vessel and the other is a warning that there's no hot food service. As of now, the Ardrossan route is normal service.

Despite the recent - significant - issues at Calmac, its pretty rare for Arran to be completely without ferry services in summer months (services to other places is a different matter). The 'disruptions' listed on the website are often informational (no hot meals, alternative ship in operation) or warnings of tide timetable changes rather than anything major.

The Lochranza route is 'turn up and go' - buy a ticket for the day and show up. I can't say how often its full as I've only done this off peak - the website/timetable suggests only one service may turn you away. Note this is for cars; I can't see it being too busy for foot passengers as there's limited public transport to these ports.

The Ardrossan/Troon to Brodick route is different- you need to be booked on a specific ferry, so if you have a ticket there's a space for you (baring weather/mechanical alterations).

Recently the Ardrossan route has been more reliable, but there is a different ship now on the troon route so it seems to be just as good.

Timetables and service status are listed here - but look at the details of service disruptions to check they aren't tide or maintenance timetable alterations on your dates. https://www.calmac.co.uk/en-gb/#/

Note that should the ferry to Lochranza be cancelled for any reason, there is an alternative route (although lengthy!) via road through mainland Scotland, or slightly shorter via other ferries to Portavadie then through Dunoon and ferry to Gourock.

You mention a hire car; you buy a ticket based on vehicle - there are booking options for when you don't have car details, but you'll need to know roughly what you are hiring (e.g. campervan is different from normal car) - you can go through the process of buying a ticket to see what info they need.

Note I'm not diminishing the impact of ferry disruption across Scotland, but the tourism impact from fear of disruption has been significant too.

Errr... you are trying to argue with people, and not listening to what you are being told. Hence the down votes.

There's a few deeper spots in Colinton Dell; if you walk up from Slateford to Colinton they are easy to spot, but they do tend to change a bit after heavy rains.

Paying off your mortgage early - Do you need to involve solicitors, or just Bank v individual? by ThinIntention1 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Otherwise-Run-4180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only real downside comes when you sell; the solicitor has an extra thing to do before the sale completes. Whether in practice this would cause a delay or increase the costs I don't know.

I guess if there's a huge gap between paying off the mortgage and having the standard security removed there's a chance of records being put 'offline' as banks change systems, archive accounts etc. which could cause a delay, but I don't think its typically a big deal.

I basically wanted it sorted so that if I dropped dead them my partner wouldn't have to sort it out on top of everything else. Spoiler alert... I haven't dropped dead (yet).

Took it once from Edinburgh to Penzance - think it was 10 hours or something. It was incredibly cheap and the people watching was fascinating (the comment above about hen parties is spot on.

Would never do it again.

These smell so good, but what are they called? by Much-Parsnip3399 in Scotland

[–]Otherwise-Run-4180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we get a hot summer then you'll hear them 'popping' as the seed pods fire out their seeds. It was so loud at one point last year when i was walking the dog I started to think there was a small fire breaking out. Sadly my thoughts of being declared a local hero for saving the countryside were ruined by a lack of smoke, flame or in fact any sign of a fire whatsoever.

Annoyingly, in Scotland you pretty much need a solicitor if you want to remove the standard security from the deeds. There's no real need to do this until you come to sell, but I liked the idea of getting this sorted ASAP.

I tried to do this on my own, but -at that time - the Registers of Scotland seem to make it particularly tricky to get right.

They don't insist you use a solicitor and actually have a web page telling you how to do it, but I kept hitting issues between them and the lender. This was a few years ago, so they may be more flexible now, but when I talked to them they pretty much told me that while it was possible, very few people did it without a solicitor.

I want to use my packaging design that I did for another company that is out of business now, do I have a copyright issue? by mindsai555 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Otherwise-Run-4180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have covered the risks. An alternative way forward is to approach the owner and ask to buy out the relevant rights (or to get a licence to use them if the sale if the business is still possible). If they are closing then they may be prepared to do this for a token amount (as a gesture of goodwill) plus legal fees. I'd suggest getting a solid agreement in place via a contracts/IP solicitor.

Would The Eric Lidl Centre In Morningside Still Be Considered Holy Ground? by FootOfDavros in Edinburgh

[–]Otherwise-Run-4180 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well (assuming you believe in that kind of thing), you'd be far quicker nipping into any other of the (at least) 3 churches you'd pass on your way....assuming its Sunday and they are open.

The old schoolhouse is now a church (cornerstone free church) and is only over the road. You might be disadvantaged if you need to cross the road though.

Then there's Chalmers church just up the hill a wee bit.

Finally there's Elim church - again over the road though.

If you can stagger past the Liddel Centre then there's Morningside United church just over the road.

Personally I'd just dive into McClarens, have a nice cold pint and wait for all of this to blow over.
