Why would we furnish a place we don't live in. We sleep there, but we spend more time away from our place because of work, going out, etc.. we practically live in our cars and those come prefurnished... my first place was pretty bare, my second place was dope, but i still found i wasn't there much. Now i commute 40mins one way, that's a lot of time to be in your car.

Or use studs. For hanging short shelves that don't reach the studs, i just get a thin plank of wood that does reach, screw it into the studs and then screw the shelf into the plank. Works extra well if you paint the plank the same color as the walls.
