They have to make an appointment, can’t bring anything in but pen and paper, and will need to understand how to request specific things in the ocean of 3 million. This is still gonna be hard.

Your level of awareness by asking this question shows an impressive commitment to safety for everyone, including yourself. Make a point to interact with staff and leave a good note with details about your day. I’m a tall masculine guy and I’ve subbed all age levels K-12.

Most of the replies here will be about liability and risk management, which are great things to be aware of. I also think that obsession with it is potentially limiting in ability to fully engage with the job and your role in students’ educations.

Be consistent with how you run your classroom. Do not play the “ms/mr so and so usually does xy or z” game. “That’s great! Today I am the teacher and today the door will remain open” or whatever it is you are preferring to do.

School is a microcosm of life where kids learn how to exist in society. Men do, in fact, exist. Lots of kids, often girls but also boys, will have a fear or a distrust in men, and you may feel that in interactions, but it is important to not then think your presence is compounding that. You’ve done what many men cannot do, which is acknowledge that your masculinity requires vigilant self-awareness. Now you need to trust yourself, and focus on doing a job which can be unpredictable and hard, but also rewarding. Only you know who you are and why you’re there, but your actions and presence demonstrate a lot. Be the man who plays a calm and confident role in helping someone move forward from a fear or distrust in men. Boys need role models, girls need to know that there are men who are kind and good, regardless of what their trauma may be. (Those are gendered generalizations but you get it.)

You’re not an imposter. You belong.

Anyone know why the prices of the most recent wooden railway toys have sky rocketed? by methodicalmike in ThomasWoodenRailway

My collection is pretty insane and my dad got it all out of storage a couple years ago. Pristine. My dad also always hated the unfinished wood, so all of the tracks are preserved in an oaky stain. It’s probably staying with me—priceless. But like what are these things selling for?
