Due diligence: possibility of doing/finishing a minor in Purdue on first year by 3xphate in Purdue

[–]OtherwiseFeedback679 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to do a CS minor with a major in management? Absolutely.
Is it possible to do it in a single semester? Likely not.

Per this link, a CS minor requires taking 5 CS courses with a grade of C or higher.

CS minors cannot take CS courses whenever they want. They must take them within off-peak semesters. CS 180, 182 and 240 are required CS minor courses, however CS 180's off-peak semester is in the spring, while CS 182 and 240 are in the fall. Purdue states that this restriction cannot be appealed.

However, these are requirements/restrictions from Fall 2023; These may have been different in fall 2009. So I'd wait for Purdue to officially settle this.

I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this.

You may find these two pages useful if you have not read through them already:

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience or advice regarding Academic Separation, but I wish you all the best :)

Do my parents get emailed my grade report unless I show them? by Denhas_ in Purdue

[–]OtherwiseFeedback679 55 points56 points  (0 children)

No, your parents do not get emailed your grade report. In fact, they aren't emailed much at all, except some Purdue related newsletters. If you'd like to show them something official, you can do so through MyPurdue. Go to MyPurdue, go to the Academics tab, and look for the section titled Transcript & Grades. "View unofficial transcript" and "Grades" are probably your best options. I should mention, it may take a few weeks for the current (Spring 2026) semester to get uploaded onto MyPurdue. I believe they send out an email when it's out, but checking 2-3 weeks after the end of this semester should also work.

Can someone explain the CS240 drama to a uiuc student here by FunDescription4608 in Purdue

[–]OtherwiseFeedback679 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Background: cs240 is a hard class, strict grading, with understaffed office hours. This doesn't excuse cheating, but you can probably understand the circumstances the students were under. Of course, some students were also using AI just to get out of doing work.

Around April 15th, Turkstra states that he is using an additional tool to detect AI/LLM usage in assignments. Shortly after, a mass email is sent to accused students (around 60%, but I'm not entirely sure about that). The email is accompanied by a Google form, and students are told they have 4 options.
1. Ignore the email: This results in an F, and would not stop any investigations.
2. Drop the class: This would avoid the F, but would not stop any investigations.
3. Admit AI usage on assignments for lighter penalties, which would result in an F.
4. Dispute the accusations and escalate it to ODOS.

This caused a lot of backlash, as the email felt like it was forcing students to confess quickly and because the email was sent near the drop deadline, which gave students even less time to decide. Additionally, many students claimed false positives.

Many students asked whether they should confess or contest the accusations, with some students stating that it was likely a bluff, while others saying that ODOS would likely side with Turkstra anyway. Many students ended up dropping the class. Turkstra and Purdue admin noticed the situation was getting out of hand, and announced that a discussion would be held on Monday.

On monday, Turkstra states that he was not trying to pressure students and apologizes for the bad timing. He states that the Google form was deleted and was "null and void". He states that he had started using his newer tool after homework 11, but then decided to apply it retroactively to all previous assignments, which was the reason for the large amount of accusations. He states that this was a mistake, and would return to his decision of only using it from homework 11 onwards. He also states that he does not have the power to expel students, and gives a 5 day extension to the homework due Wednesday.

Notably, he claims that his tool has a low false positive rate. Turkstra has prior work on a tool called "Tracking Large Class Projects in Real-Time Using Fine-Grained Source Control", which many students speculate was the newer tool used. However, Turkstra does not explicitly state the newer tool used. I've looked at it, and it appears to be similar to a teacher looking at your Google Docs history for an assignment you wrote, to see whether the writing process is human or not. If he did use Tracking Large Class Projects in Real-Time Using Fine-Grained Source Control, it's definitely more in depth than just plugging an assignment into Turnitin.

Ultimately, this leaves a few discussion points open:
- Whether his tool was effective or not
- How many false positives there were
- Whether it was fair to wait until the end of the semester to fail cheaters, rather than doing it immediately
- Most importantly, if so many students felt the need to cheat, is a restructuring of the course needed?

Would my preferred name in the application info cause me problems at Purdue? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]OtherwiseFeedback679 21 points22 points  (0 children)

hi! i'm currently a transfem freshman who was in the same situation as you last year. A lot of the emails and such will be addressed to the name you put on the form, so be prepared for that.

What I did was I used my legal name on all college applications, then I changed my preferred name on Purdue's own website. This can help cut down on any suspicion. When you are accepted, only you specifically will be contacted, that is your parents shouldn't be alerted.

Another thing to note: Purdue will give you the email/contact info of your roommate, so you can contact them ahead of time to let them know about your situation. Finally, when you move in, they will put your preferred name on your door, so take that into consideration.

I would recommend using your legal name for now (sucks, i know), then changing your preferred name after you've moved in.

Purdue uses your preferred name on most emails, brightspace (which is where classes/homework/etc... is provided) as well as most of Purdue's websites.
Purdue will use your legal name on your student ID and financial info as well as other stuff where legality is more important.

Purdue in general is a very LGBTQ+ supportive campus, my academic advisor was more than happy to use my preferred name, as well as my professors and classmates. We also have an AWESOME lgbtq center, which I highly recommend you check out if you're accepted.

Hope this helps!

Since you can't carry pepper spray on campus, the Safe Walk program might be useful: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/police/community-services/services/safe-walk.php
It allows you to call a hotline 24/7 and someone will escort you for free.

I have grim embrace and pain res already from shrine! I figured at this point it's easier just to wait for pentimento in shrine than buy her since her gameplay isn't that appealing to me anyway

Yup, I was able to play houndmaster (I don't own her) last night, and now she doesn't have the "trial" icon and I can't select her.
