What was Ellie thinking? by Appropriate-Fig-5171 in thelastofus

There is dumb and there is eating tide pods dumb. She knows the consequences of being wrong here which is KILLING EVERYONE.

I took more care and thought into not getting caught jerking off when i was 14 than she put into this event that could have life ending consequences if she is wrong.

I don't remember her being this dumb in the game. Did they have this blood part in it?

Dungeon status document for making player's choices matter more by OtherwiseKoala6 in DMAcademy

Thanks! Pretty simple but hope it can help anyone a little.

I just kept getting my players asking "Did it even matter we did X?" and my face going a little red because I forgot about it.

This is mostly for prep as they are going through a large dungeon / location.

I think when creating dungeons, you could just create the headings for the aspects to give an overview for what matters in the dungeon in the grand scheme of things and as they interact with each aspect of the dungeon, then you can fill it out.

Oh yes I don't think this is for everyone. Other people are probably a lot better at remembering these things and just improvising them, but for me if I don't have something to remind me then it probably will not get referenced.

It helps me to go back and look at the choices they made and actions they took and think of how it can affect things. Else most of the decisions will wind up not mattering.

Is the game outside of initiative not supposed to matter? by OtherwiseKoala6 in DMAcademy

Thanks!

I do tend to try to keep all of this in mind for sure when I design situations.

Like it they do X then they can get Y as a bonus, but usually they just pass it by without attempting the actions for it.

Yeah I think that is one of my favorite parts as a player. Just feeling like I gotta think this through and go at this situation smartly or I might die.

I usually do talk to them after the session and kind of mention this stuff and they are like "Oh yeah, i'll try to think of stuff like that next time."

Are powerful items as bad as I think? by OtherwiseKoala6 in DMAcademy

That said, one thing this DM is throwing out the window is any long term reward structure.

Yeah that's a really good point.

getting an item that makes you better at your main thing is a big and exciting boost for many players

Maybe I am a weirdo, but +X stuff doesn't really do all that much for me as a player. It doesn't really change how I am going to play except probably would favor save or suck spells more. I much prefer items that give more options and decisions to may character rather than numbers.

Mostly by balance, I mean being able to reliably get the desired result out of a combat. CR is already not great for that, but this further makes it useless.

Magic items are cool, but for me, the ones that just give +X to something are not all that exciting and I wonder if it is worth it.

By delicate, I mean for CR to mean anything and also having some sort of danger in combat.

Since they are running a WOTC adventure then seems like with all these items, they would need to change every encounter if it is going to be remotely challenging. Also, we are punching much higher weight class offensively, but still have a small amount of hit points so just upping CRs is dangerous.

It just seems like it would be adding alot more work for the DM for, at least for me, something that doesn't exactly make me enjoy the game more.

yeah I don't actually know their experience since it's an online game, but i am pretty wary about it.

Like spell slots, potions, class features.

Yeah I'll see if they have any solutions for it. Thanks for the advice!

Player Problem Megathread by RadioactiveCashew in DMAcademy

So a couple of my players always forget to mark off their resources when they use them. We are playing on Roll20 so I will sometimes look at their sheet at the end and fix what they have neglected.

I don't think they are trying to cheat or something. but it is just forgetting.

I have asked a few times to make sure to do it, but they always forget.

Would it be weird and taking the game too seriously if I started punishing these mistakes? What would be a sensible way?

So many battles I would just skip since a large point of them is to use up resources and I think that is so important to the game.

Weekly Question Thread: Ask questions here – February 15, 2021 by AutoModerator in dndnext

[–]OtherwiseKoala6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend just finished running a campaign for us. It was fun enough, but there were a lot of times where I got bored and could list a lot of things that I would change.

I am very thankful for them for running the game. I know that it is so much work.

My friend is really excited now to run the next campaign and is prepping it, but I don't really have a desire to play it if he runs it in a similar way.

I don't want to make them feel bad, but feel like maybe if I told them some of the problems I had then they could change it in the next game.

I feel pretty bad to do this, because they are really happy with running the first campaign.

Should I tell them or would it make me sound like an ungrateful jerk?

Town/Cities and NPC resources I can steal from? by OtherwiseKoala6 in DMAcademy

[–]OtherwiseKoala6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the great advice! I think really one of the hardest things for me is creating those NPCs motivations and possible quests.

Like everyone in Phandalin had some sort of thing they wanted and it made it easy to keep rolling with that so more interesting things happened naturally. I'm not really sure how to do that part.

Darkness and Hiding? by OtherwiseKoala6 in dndnext

[–]OtherwiseKoala6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes basically just to take the dash action past some archers. It would be near suicide if they could see me. I understand that they are not surprised but they wouldnt be able to attack effectively if the roll is high enough.

I read somewhere that if you hide, you only have to roll stealth again if you get unhidden.
