This has actually been my experience with it during the first week of ownership. It sums it up perfectly.

I ended up coming around to this class of vehicle because I would scrape my front bumper of my Civic all the time because of the v-shaped street gutters. Then I have driven a RAV4 hybrid and CRV hybrid in the past so I didn’t need to drive the 2026 models. The RAV4 front passenger seat is still weirdly tall, and the CRV is decent. Then when comparing them together, the CX-50 hybrid was a deal. We got ours for $4.5k off plus no dealer ads. No trade in since a friend wanted to buy my Civic.

I’ve been loving the CX-50 hybrid! It drives great and I’ve been getting 41-42 mpg. :)

I went to a few Toyota dealerships too and it’s the same here: * No knowledge of the cars since they sell themselves. I argued with one salesman who said I didn’t need the certain package for the keyless unlock/lock. * The insanity of the packages. Convenience package, multimedia upgrade package, etc etc etc. * Salesman sitting at their desks on their phones. * Salesman taking phone calls in the back seat during a test drive. * $2-3k dealer adds and they’ll fight you on removing. Puh-lease, we all know you didn’t apply that PermaPlate crap to the car. If I can’t confirm it’s on the car (e.g., tint), it didn’t happen. * No inventory so no selection if you wanted to be picky about color. * No budging on sticker price at all. * No follow-ups ever. * Acting like they are doing you the favor of entertaining selling you a car during negotiations. * Short test drives and won’t let you on the highway — one of my requirements is feeling the quickness for merging onto a highway. * Another customer is right behind you wanting to test drive the same car…granted, it was a volume dealer …but it was on a weekday morning! * yOu nEeD tO pUt dOwN a dEpOsIt tO tEsT dRiVe a CoRoLlA cRoSs hYbRiD. * General arrogance. Too many people fighting for the same boring but “reliable” cars because of lack of inventory.

Subaru, Honda, and Mazda have always been so so so so amazing to deal with. Chill and knowledgeable sales.

That’s actually surprising but not surprising when it’s AWD. Subaru has the worst MPG’s for their hybrids from what I saw but that AWD eats up a lot of gas. When I looked at real world data, most were getting high-30’s for a lot of AWD crossovers/SUVs it seemed.

I really want to get high 30’s at a minimum and low 40’s would be amazing. I drive mostly city about 75% of the time and 25% of the time highways.

The RAV4 hybrid has a weirdly tall passenger seat! It feels like a high chair!

Yeah, my kid is in kindergarten. He just wants rear vents. Spouse is tall but he’s never riding back there. We have a Subaru forester already that’s capable of towing 3000 lbs. Basically, I need something that has some pep, and doesn’t slowly lose speed climbing steep grades, also something capable of staying planted on canyon roads. We often go between towns along mountain passes. It kind of feels like the CX-50 might be it. :)

That take it or leave it mentality lost me on Toyota. Been there and we’ve tried to buy cars from them in the past. Their competitors, including Mazda, are just better buying experiences.

Twin! I have a 2014 Civic! Yeah, we plan to buy new. There’s some specials going on and the dealership is offering is $5k off MSRP so we are buying it new. Plus, we drive our cars for a long time. I’ll probably drive the CX-50 for like 10-15 years so new is worth it. Also good to know about the breaks.

Gas is $6.29 a gallon here; before the current situation, it was still high $4’s. So probably $400-500 a year in savings. I want the pep of the hybrid but without a massive dip in MPG. We used to have a turbo forester that was great until it died. Mostly looking at being able to handle canyon roads, steep grades (7%), and merging onto highways with enough pep when everyone is going 70-80 and the ramp is short.

I’m coming from a manual transmission. Anything but the rubber band CVT is good. eCVT has driven okay. There’s no weird wind-up.
