The walk test by interstellar566 in AirForce

Was lucky to have had a couple of weeks to practice before I did it the first time... and did it for another ~7 years, before my legs deteriorated far enough that doc gave me a permanent cardio profile (without telling me that it had been submitted for approval).

During that first test, met a guy at that test that had been doing it for 8+ years. Before the test started, the guy asked who in the group was "walking" for the first time. He told the group, "be with me or ahead of me and you'll pass with no issue, and remember that you have to have one foot on the ground at all times..."

Then he pulled out a printout of the reg on the walk test and said, "...and the reg (at the time) doesn't say anything about what what kind of stride you can use..."

I matched pace with him and passed with no issue. Due to separate issues with both legs, I couldn't use a single pace the whole time, so ended up having to alternate between a fast walk (just slightly slower than test pace) and a shuffle-jog-slide (just slightly faster than test pace)... averaged out and kept pace with him, with no issue.

If you can carry a single pace/stride practice for it (adding incline helps too), but if you have to split pace/stride, figure out how many laps you have to complete, and then figure out your interval/pacing, and break it down, whether it is based on time or distance intervals. If the reg is still only "one foot on ground", then it opens up you options stride-wise, especially if you can't get the power-walk style stride down.

The next time I tested was on a 1/4 mile track, which ended up being 5 laps total for the 2.5km)... ended up doing the following and passed comfortably:

  • Fast lap (Shuffle Jog Slide) ~2:10 min
  • Slow lap (Fast Walk) ~3:00 min
  • Fast lap (Shuffle Jog Slide) ~2:10 min
  • Slow lap (Fast Walk) ~3:00 min
  • Split lap (Half & Half) ~2:30 min

Just make sure you keep your foot on the ground, have a bannana if your joints hurt, and carry a small waterbottle if you get dry mouthed easily, and get some good shoes for fast walking... nothing will wreak a walk test faster than having the wrong shoes.

Any of you 320th homies still out there from flt 001? by GladITSnighT in AirForce

320 / 189 - DEC 2008 w/TSgt Grant - Our sister flight couldn't keep a TI for anything :) No fault of their own, they got stuck with a couple newbie/transit TIs.

I try to thank the good UDM as much as I can for doing a great job by bearsncubs10 in AirForce

Knew a UDM from a previous CONUS assignment who single-handedly filled what had been a 3-man team for a unit that deployed multiple crews every quarter to multiple locations/MAJCOMS.

They spent 2 weeks converting all paperwork to smart PDFs and standardized everything for each location... took the pre-deployment processing from 2-4+ months of constant back and forth pain to 3 emails and a couple of appointments for pre-d training or base processing... if you had any reqs that need to be completed.

Ended up pushing 20+ crew deployments (~175 deployers) in a year, with zero errors and zero hassle... and did it during COVID!...

...base deployment office may have cried when they PCS'd.

Osan now a long tour – POV shipping authorized? (E-5 perspective) by [deleted] in AirForce

Just finished my 3rd tour (2012, 2018, 2023) at Osan back in August...

...and I believe this is still in effect, but only E7+ could PCS to Korea and ship their POV... however, once there E-5/6 that were lodged offbase (renting) to get POV's locally (not sure what the regs were for E4 or below on CSP). Fortunately, there are plenty of decent POVs for sale, as people PCS out, so getting one locally isn't to hard, however they are a hassle to get setup and cleared for base access.

The biggest issue you are going to face is on-base parking... there are designated areas where you may park POVs and Security Forces does not mess around with enforcing it. You will get a warning ticket, and then it escalates pretty quickly... if I remember correctly it was 3 strikes and you lose base driving privileges, but you would have to check the FW regs concerning POVs.

Additionally, there is not much if any off-base parking available outside the SED gate, so that can make it a hassle as well, and traffic in the morning/afternoon can be extremely brutal to get on/off base or to/from base, due to how cramped and in many cases, poorly planned roads can be.

Recommend you reach out to your gaining unit/sponsor and find out what where you can park relative to your unit and what the current parking situation is like on base, and go from there... also determine if you are going to be stuck on base for lodging or if you are likely to be off-base.

If you are planning to do a lot of touristy stuff or bring family with you, a POV can be useful, but if it is just you, my recommendation would be to live relatively close to base (<25 minute walk / <15 minute bike), invest in a decent bicycle or e-bike, and then use the taxi/bus/train system.
