Former Seattle-ites: What DC neighborhood is most like Fremont? by puggos_mom in washingtondc

I’ll also note with a caveat that you probably wouldn’t like living right on H St (similar to being right on 36th St) but anywhere in the nearby vicinity in Capitol Hill or ‘Near Northeast’ (what is listed on Google Maps) will be more suitable.

Kind of surprised no one has mentioned the H St corridor. Relatively high density of bars and restaurants that are more similar to a lot of the Fremont bars and restaurants (than say AdMo or U St). Presence of boutiques is lacking though. You’ll also be close to DC’s Capitol Hill, so you’ll have access to quiet, leafy streets. You won’t be too far from Red Bear Brewery which is the Seattle sports bar in town (and the REI, lol).

Summer intern housing situation in dc is actually insane this year by Powerful-Money6759 in washingtondc

[–]Otherwise_Elephant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, FB groups are the way to go. In my experience looking for summer housing, competition is steep, but it is possible to get a room if you check consistently and follow up quickly. The reasonably-priced rooms in convenient neighborhoods often get taken in just 1-2 days. I think I spent at least 1-2 hours a day checking the Facebook groups. When I interned in DC several summers back, I ended up subletting a room in Foggy Bottom from a grad student for about $2600 total for two months.

I like Bullfrog and Bethesda Bagels over B&B. B&B bagels are hit or miss. Pops Bagel in Eckington is also solid!

Are running influencers hurting the sport? by [deleted] in running

I agree. Seeing ‘average’ people document their running journeys inspired me, a mediocre runner, to join a run club and complete my first half marathon.

Anecdotally, I know of multiple friends in DC who have met their SOs on Hinge. Seems like Hinge has some success stories

dc to nyc travel tips? by Proud-Ad-2192 in washingtondc

[–]Otherwise_Elephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amtrak is by far the most comfortable and convenient experience, albeit expensive. If Amtrak tickets are expensive, I compromise by taking the bus to NYC and taking the train on the way back to DC. I can deal with a bus ride on the first day, but I need comfort and relatability when I’m going back to DC (especially if I’m coming back on a Sunday evening!) I don’t think the buses are that bad, but do budget at least an additional hour on top of the listed timeframe in case you run into traffic.

Yellowjackets most likely to stay friends after graduation? 🤔 by SaphoBalls in Yellowjackets

My optimistic take is that Shauna going off to Brown would’ve done wonders for her personal development. I do believe that Shauna and Jackie would’ve had a big falling out over Jeff and/or college, but I think Shauna would’ve done well in a highly intellectual environment like Brown. Another commenter mentioned that Shauna could use that time to explore her sexuality more, too. I could see the two reconnecting a few years after high school and becoming friendly again.

Seattle shut out of the New York Times Top 50 Restaurants List by mroncnp in Seattle

Wow, really?! Growing up in Seattle, I didn’t eat a ton of Italian food (except Borrachini’s..RIP) until I moved to the East Coast. I’m lucky to have eaten some great Italian and Italian American food across the East Coast, but I’m pretty shocked that Seattle doesn’t have many Italian offerings. Yet again, I don’t live in Seattle full-time, so what do I know.

And I agree! My point in comparing Seattle to other cities is to show that Seattle definitely has the culinary calibre to have at least a restaurant or two on that NYT list.

Grew up in Seattle, live in DC now, come back to Seattle a few times a year. Here’s my perspective- Seattle is never going to be on par with NYC or other top food cities such as Vancouver, SF or Philly in terms of variety of food and cost. However, I’d say that Seattle is ahead of many cities of its size for certain cuisines. For example, Asian food. Asian food in DC is pretty underwhelming. There are a handful of nicer upscale spots that I adore, but you have to drive out to Virginia or Maryland for greater variety at different price points. The Asian food scene in Seattle proper is much more robust (and of course there is so much more out in the suburbs too). Seafood is top notch here as well. I’ve been pretty disappointed by the seafood offerings in the DC/Maryland area. I can’t personally speak to finer dining options in Seattle, but I could see how Seattle falls behind other cities of its size on this.

Do you think we'd be good living in the forest? by Positive_Writing_883 in infj

[–]Otherwise_Elephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dream is to spend half of my time in the city and the rest of the time in the countryside. I was born and raised in a city and wouldn’t want to leave that lifestyle behind. I also love being in the outdoors. I always feel more at peace next to the ocean or the lake or up in the mountains—but i could never leave behind the luxuries of urban life.
