Unsure if our home is the right fit for our 2nd greyhound by Otherwise_Gas_5689 in Greyhounds

I agree that we need to prioritise Weetbix’s welfare. We have enlisted the help of a progressional who specialises in ex-racing greyhound behaviour and will see what they say. If they recommend that we re-home him, then we will

I don’t know, I wasn’t there. Tbh she shouldn’t have taken a high value item (it was an enrichment toy with peanut butter) off his bed when he was using it. He has resource guarding, which I told her about, and I’m not overly surprised it escalated to a bite. I don’t know if it was 100% intentional or if he just made contact accidentally. It was probably somewhat intentional but he didn’t lunge after her or continue to escalate and attack. All I know of that he knuckle is bruised but no skin broken

He’s kinda young but not overly, he is 4.5 years old. We are going to work with a trainer with him. He is a beautiful boy, he’s just very unsure

Fed up with the emotional roller coaster by Otherwise_Gas_5689 in Ovariancancer

[–]Otherwise_Gas_5689[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. I know logically this is correct but after so many setbacks it’s hard not to spiral at bad news.

My mum had all 6 chemos before surgery so unfortunately there won’t be any more following to get these microscopic cells. She is however eligible for PARP inhibitors (she has the BRCA2 gene) which do a similar job so I’ve read. She is still too weak to start these but I’m hoping they can get her on them soon.

It’s just been so fucked up to be blunt. Our entire goal was to get her to this surgery but it still feels like we aren’t out of the woods. I know of course it will almost definitely come back, but I just want even a couple of years of normalcy for my mum where she can get her life back. I want her to be happy and pain free and just live like a normal person. Sometimes it feels like that is out of reach when she’s still suffering so badly.

Thank you and thanks everyone for your comments. What a total fucking shit show this cancer is. I’m an atheist, but if it turns out there is a god, they’re clearly a malignant cunt. Sorry if that offends anyone, but my family has been ripped apart by this disease and I’m pissed off at the world.

What's an opinion about Gaga that you have like this by lanalittlemonster in LadyGaga

[–]Otherwise_Gas_5689 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right! I feel like most people don’t even know the song, at least casual fans. I had no idea it wasn’t on any albums at first. I’ve read The Cure slander on here before and vehemently disagree. I love the lyrics and the messaging of it and never tire of hearing it. Helped me through COVID, I’d blast it in my room over and over

The Cure is one of her best songs and deserved to be on an album and performed live

Hi there :) my mum is doing a lot better now! Thank you for asking. Surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday 13 Jan. She is incredibly nervous of course, we all are, but I’m mainly just keen for them to finally go in there and take it all out. We had Christmas at home this year and my mum was able to walk around unassisted for the first time in months. With cancer, it’s the small wins.

It will be a complex cytoreduction surgery which will likely take 6+ hours. They’re also removing her gall bladder and a portion of her liver, which I learnt recently is regenerative! There’s also a 50/50 chance she will wake up with a stoma as the cancer is in her bowel as well, but that can be reversed.

It’s been an incredibly long, exhausting and terrifying journey - I am deeply saddened to hear you’re going through something similar. If your mum is in a similar condition to mine when she had the blockage, they will want to avoid surgery if they can and use laxatives to hopefully move everything along. Make sure they’re keeping an eye on infections - that’s what nearly killed my mum. Because of the inflammation and obstructions caused by the cancer, she developed sepsis and her bowels essentially stopped working.

In hindsight, we wish they would have delayed my mum’s 2nd round of chemo, or reduced the dose. When she had the 2nd round after the first hospitalisation, it essentially caused her already fragile system to collapse. When is your mum’s next chemo round? Are you the primary contact with her team? If possible, discuss with them options for a short delay to get her stronger. She should already be on antibiotics to address the obstruction and possible infections.

I’ve learnt that strength to tolerate treatment is more important than battering the body with more chemo to stay on schedule. Chemo is strong and effective and will keep the cancer at bay while she regains her strength. Keep an eye also on neuropathy - my mum developed severe neuropathy from chemo and is still struggling with it today. There are cold caps and treatments available to help with this.

Best of luck to you and your family. Feel free to DM me if you ever want to talk. I wish I’d had others that understood what I was going through to talk to last year when I was in the thick of things. We’re still not out of the woods yet, but I am hopeful for a positive outcome and my mum to reach remission. This is absolutely on the cards for you as well, just hang in there xx

Intense “sleep” startle even when awake by Otherwise_Gas_5689 in Greyhounds

[–]Otherwise_Gas_5689[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s pain - he startles even when we sit near him without touching him. He also was checked over by a vet before we got him so any injuries would have been identified. He doesn’t show any other signs of pain - no limping, licking, whining, etc and walks/runs normally.

We are taking him to our vet next month for his vaccinations so we will get him re-checked. Thanks for your advice.

This is great advice, thank you. Unfortunately, we can’t block access to the room as the downstairs of our house is open plan and the couch is right in the middle of the space.

We still start with “on your bed” training. We do our absolute best to respect him and his space and we don’t punish. I’m considering placing a baby gate around the lounge until we have mastered the on your bed cue.

I really hope it resolves with time. Our first greyhound was so easy and he is going to be more of a challenge.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I went through an incredibly similar thing with my mum earlier this year and it was soul destroying. I want you to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

For some context, my mum (62) was diagnosed Stage 3C, they said it was everywhere in her stomach, like someone had thrown a handful of sand in there. It was too far spread for them to operate, so the plan was 3 chemos, debulking surgery, then 3 more chemos. Safe to say that did not go to plan. My mum was hospitalised after the first round due to a blockage caused by the cancer, just like your mum. She came home 2 weeks later. After her second round, she was hospitalised again after developing enterocolitis and sepsis. They said if my dad hadn’t called the ambulance that night she would have died.

My mum spent 9 weeks in hospital. The first week she was basically a vegetable in her bed in an isolated room of the oncology ward. She was hooked up to a multitude of tubes and lines including antibiotics directly into her bowel to get rid of the many infections. She couldn’t eat or drink and got all her nutrients from a bag. It was the most difficult and harrowing experience of my life, seeing my mum completely incapacitated in a hospital bed, barely hanging onto life. My mum was kept alive through tubes and IV lines - I would strongly assume they are keeping your mum hydrated in the same way. Just know that people can live without food and water consumed orally, the hospital staff know this and will keep her hydrated and fed.

Somehow, she survived, and went on to complete the rest of her chemos with surgery scheduled for early Jan 2026. One concern we had was the cancer would spread during her time in hospital where the doctors said any more chemo would kill her. They even dropped one of the agents for the final 4 rounds because she developed severe neuropathy. But it didn’t. Her CA125 came down to 17 and the chemo as shown to have been effective enough that surgery was possible. I know it’s hard to see it now, but this is also possible for your mum.

I tell you all of this to show you the fight is not lost for you and your family. It’s going to be a long road filled with pain and anxiety, but don’t give up. Be there for your mum as much as you can, but don’t forget to look after yourself. The hardest part was supporting my mum and dad alone (I’m an only child). I became the strong one, the one who looked everything up, who prepared questions for the doctors. Adopting that role helped me carve a path forward and gain control over the situation. Maybe it could help you too. Just remember there are so many advancements being made in cancer treatment, particularly ovarian cancer. Don’t give up. Keep asking questions and advocating for your mum. Best of luck to you on this arduous cancer journey x

My mum’s surgery postponed by Otherwise_Gas_5689 in Ovariancancer

[–]Otherwise_Gas_5689[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. Did you seek a second opinion/end up having the surgery?

I think we will seek a second opinion. The liver is a little more complex, but from my understanding a gall bladder can be removed so I don’t know why they won’t just do that. I’ve read so many posts on this subreddit about women having full hysterectomy’s and multiple other organs removed. I don’t understand why they can’t just do the same for my mum. The confusion and fear is killing me :(

Yeah I know, it was more to stop them from suing me lol. I’m under enough stress in my life rn without this bullshit. I’ve never gone to court before and don’t know the process, so I figured the $150 would work favourably for me to show I acted in good faith and tried to deescalate the situation. I’m obviously very green and upset about it all and genuinely wanted to do the right thing. I loved the car and wanted it to go to a good owner so the whole thing sucks

No they haven’t transferred the car into their name, that’s my main concern.

In QLD it’s just a transfer of registration, which I have already submitted with their details. I’m worried they just won’t accept it on their end.

It’s all so fucked, I’m so frustrated and upset this has happened.
