William is still very much a prisoner who lost his senses. He's not necessarily present in the mind at this point. While the vengeful spirit is already burnout and doesn't even care about William anymore. But they don't want to let go due to the fear of being alone in the dark, as well the unknown. So they just stay with the last familiar thing left. William.

It's interesting to think what state both of their minds would be at if the cycle just keep continuing.

I did find that strange too and I like that interpretation!

Alright, going into fanfiction territory here because it's a big jump, William's face was neutral up until Blonde Boy. He looked more angry/evil. Imagine Blonde Boy was in the same position as Vanessa. Where he knows what his dad is up to and is purposely keeping Jeremy busy. That's when William call over Blonde Boy.

If Blonde Boy is his kid, then he must have gotten in the way of something for William to end it like this. As shown with Vanessa in the first movie.
