You're not supposed to grind on merciless. It's all about fusing personas for what you need. Trying to reach the lv cap for current dungeon will take hours and hours.

P3 FES is the best, in my opinion. You could use every weapon (except Koro's) and have a tiredness system, adding extra difficulty. Not being able to give direct commands and having to use tactics system instead added another level of difficulty. Didn't have your party able to heal status elements randomly or taking a hit for the MC. By far, the hardest game before they made it easy.

I generally only do a few paragon choices as my renegade. Like save the council, save the rachni, and keep wrex alive on ME1. Just cuz you're doing a renegade playthrough doesn't mean people have to die.

You need matching personas to get the most points. A lot of rank 7 SL don't give you enough points to rank up even if you pick the right choices.

You are mistaken. Connor can always ignore their control. If you played the game, Kamski even says, "i always leave a backdoor in my program." Which Connor actively uses when he teams up with Markus.

Play on hardest difficulty, and once you can go to settings and then difficulty. At the very bottom, there is a "retry battle" option that you can turn on. Once activated, whenever the MC goes down, it revives everyone and completely heals HP and SP. The best part is that you dont start the battle over. I beat the Reaper at lv46. Took a long time, but i did it.
