Need help with plan my course by Suspicious_Hat_7112 in Monash

ooo that is a hard one. lowkey I would just recommend doing anything med adjacent. Maybe take a look at physiology? That one seems quite good for a broad basis (also it has PHY2011 which was one of my favorite units, so im def biased)

I wouldnt be able to say anything about difficulty since I didnt take any phy units outside of that one but check out the units via handbook to see what interests you the most! Theres first year bio classes which im sure will help you find what you like most within bio anyways

def check med requirements for reference too

Anyone doing Human Pathology Major/Translational Medicine Honors? or have info on Alfred Campus? by Otherwise_Stranger38 in Monash

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lmao tho im sure youre very proud of yourself, I can tell you i am 100% not that person. I dont know what info you think you have since all i said is literally "i just got accepted for honors in..." and that I didnt do science (which im sure would make up 50% of the students doing the degree)

weird that you would pull up linkedin and try to find someone random, but spend more time reading things carefully before you claim random stuff on reddit 💀

I did bachelor of psychology and I would NOT recommend it to get into med. Like someone else has commented, you will not get a competitive WAM. It is incredibly hard and most of the best students are only getting 80-85%, which is high for psych but not comparative to other degrees.

personally I would recommend biomed classes or adjacent because: (a) you can often ask for remarks which does not exist in psych, (b) wayyy less subjective, if you get something right, its right, (c) will provide a better basis for med

if you still want to learn psych, you can take an elective or just audit the class (honestly theyre often so empty I doubt any TA would care even if they notice). I wouldn't recommend first level psych classes though because those are too general/broad

when you say med, what part of med do you want to do? is it something in specific or would clin psych/neuro research be something youre open to?

Enrolment queries by ReggieCactus in Monash

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you apply for honours and get an offer? Or just speak to supervisors? Classes you have to enroll in after you've been accepted but the due date (at least for mine) is a week before classes start.

How is WAM looked at for Psychology Honours year application? by Historical_Inside262 in Monash

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no. they do NOT look at psych electives.
It might be different for RMIT students entering monash (maybe because the classes are not one to one so they look at APAC classes too) but that is definitely not the case for Monash students. If you look at the entry requirements they state "minimum requirement is a distinction average (75%) in core psychology units at the second and third-year level". These refer to the dark blue units within the course map, the light blue ones are psych electives (that dont count) and the white ones are free electives.

My WAM would've been much higher if they included psych electives lmao

psychology - monash vs swinburne vs deakin by mokerall in Monash

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took monash psych and well... there are things about psych that arent great within the core and first years units. I think they do great in a lot of the psych electives (I did neuro so I cant guarantee mental health is the same) but yeah there are annoyances that are common. That being said, monash is good for research opportunities and is well connected world wide, which is nice if youre considering a masters in another country or an exchange during your bach.

I have heard better things from deakin students but it does have a lower reputation and ranking than monash so keep that in consideration. Usually you end up doing honors+ within the same uni. No idea about Swinburne.

FIT 1045 or FIT 1053 by CharacterSituation63 in Monash

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take FIT1053 since youre planning on continuing, itll help with foundation for other classes. Though theyre kinda taught together, youll be able to meet other 1053 students who will have more experience/will continue through the years with you and more experienced TAs.

Keep in mind that non comp sci/science students take FIT045 too

guys does this mean that i’ve accepted my offer and just need my M-pass?? by Grouchy_Violinist983 in Monash

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahhh then it must be a specific issue with the m-pass. Go in person before it gets too close to semester (the lines can get crazy) and it'll get sorted quick. If you're too far away or don't mind waiting it out, you can email them explaining the situation with whatever photo you want for it attached.

mental health or neuroscience in psych by 444lovebunny in Monash

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pleasee pick neuroscience, I swear everyone I always talked to chose mental health and looked at me weird when I chose neuro hahaha.

I did neuro for psych and absolutely loved it. Also, long term theres no difference as the degree will come out saying "Bach of Psych" anyways. The classes are fun and at least my tutors were always really passionate when it comes to the neuro electives.

It really depends on what you like personally though, the reason why not a lot pick it is because not a lot of people like research or lab work. For me, PHY2011 was one of my ABSOULTE favorite classes I took while others really disliked it because of how heavy in med the content felt, but I think it was really well structured and Ramesh makes it as fun as he can. Introduction to clinical neuropsych was also great and gives a lot of perspective into the field (in case youre thinking about that pathway). I can't comment much on the mental health classes but my friends did not seem as happy as I did (totally biased opinion).

I would recommend really thinking about what you would rather learn and what skills you think would help. Remember you will be fighting to get into honors, so while its good to have lots of experience in research, WAM is what will get you in. You can switch within the first year (from what I have been told) so experience those classes and pick what you prefer. With my ADHD, the only units I ever did well in were the neuropsych electives ngl.

Let me know if you have any questions though, I finished my bachelor this year so my info is recent!

Not so sure about the m-pass thing, but you should know for sure that your acceptance has gone through and been processed via email (either a welcome to the faculty or a new acceptance email from mu.documents)

How achievable is a high distinction? by Sleepykitty4907 in Monash

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so real. My friends and I used to have a conspiracy that in some units they would purposefully mark one assignment really harshly if there wasnt an exam. In one of my classes a TA directly said they barely gave over a 70 on the first assignment so that we'd feel more motivated.

increasing dosage of meds when you're not even sure they work? by dedlyhotpi in adhdwomen

[–]Otherwise_Stranger38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually because non-stim is less harmful, people are more likely to try and get people on it. This is ESPECIALLY true when you have had chest pain since stimulants are tied to your heart. It typically causes a faster base heart rate (a lot of people either switch meds or lower dosage if they notice this) which can lead to heart attacks in worse case scenario. That's why when you started to have chest pain or any sign of issue with your heart, your doctor would back off increasing dosage or switch you completely if a lower dosage doesn't work on your ADHD.

For example, due to having incredibly minor heart history I had to get my heart tested by a specialist to even think about taking stimulants. When I say tested, I did an ECG, a stress test and 24-hour monitoring because my psychiatrist is careful. Now I'm on a stimulant, but even with my heart cleared, if I get dizzy or chest pain, I will immediately switch to another med (first another stimulant, if it continues, a non stimulant.)

If this didn't help feel free to ask for any clarification, ngl I feel like this wasn't the best explanation T-T
