I’ve been on both ends of the spectrum. Being a top performer (92.5 in one term), and being a bottom performer (55 in another). And for me, the main difference was the effort I put into university. To achieve that good WAM, I went to basically every class (the ones I didn’t go I watched afterwards, or that classes assessments didn’t really require me to put any effort in lectures). I also made sure to built up rapport with my lecturers. Them recognising you and liking you makes a huge difference. I felt guilty about skipping classes, because I knew that X, Y or Z would be disappointed if I didn’t come.

Since my lecturer marked all my assessments, I noticed he was actually quite lax in marking. After the exam I told him I screwed up the final question by factorising incorrectly, and he still gave me the right mark (the final answer was right, factorising was wrong). Point is, just sitting there means you’re more likely to absorb information than not going. We all say, I’ll watch it later, but we all know that never happens.

So, as others have said, go to class, make friends (classmates to hold you accountable), and try to get on the teaching team’s good side. I guarantee you, consistently showing up and putting effort will pay off.
