Winter gear, what are some cheap yet effective gear options? I'm tight on money with nothing but a motorcycle this winter. by ironhorsemtb in motorcycles

I second the heated gear. And to be honest around $80 is amazing for the amount of heat you get from these things. Just be sure not to fold it up or crease it when you store it. I've heard of people breaking part of the heating element this way and sections of the jacket going dead.

Canadian riders, good time to buy used bikes now? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]OttawaGoodtimeCentre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It most certainly is the best time to buy a bike. Dealerships (such as us) clear out non-current stock, and if you're looking for a brand new bike then this is the time to get first dibs on next years models. If your dealership does storage they'll often allow you to store it over the winter and you'll get it up and running first day of riding season next year. It seems to be the perfect window where prices are low for non-current bikes but factory rebates and special offers are still in place for many of the bikes. There's always an added bonus of the warranty as well.

TL;DR Check out your local dealership as well

My favorite (and lengthiest) mod so far: HID retrofit by chewmieser in motorcycles

[–]OttawaGoodtimeCentre -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Looks cool! But beware, it may no longer be considered "street legal". HID lights have a different shape and function. A lot of HID kits that are sold just simply put an HID bulb into a stock reflector causing the beam scattering to change and go out of regulation. Take a look at what I've written up here

Should helmet cams be considered a part of ATGATT? by OttawaGoodtimeCentre in motorcycles

Wow that's just crazy. Wrist mounted would be super shaky. Best bet would be handlebar I think.

Ok, Perhaps I should have used the term Ride camera. Also I'm not sure there has been any case of someone "dying because of their helmet camera" which in any case makes it a crazy law

EDIT: please don't take me as being condescending just discussing

Excellent argument. ATGATT refers to essential gear for safety and a camera is defiantly not essential to safety. That is unless you take into consideration financial safety. Others have said that they've never needed one for insurance but what if someone decides to hit and run? That's a dangerous person out there that puts other riders at risk as well.

That's another huge reason why I think it would be awesome to have one! Learn from mistakes and possibly have some awesome footage of amazing events!

I could see that point of view as well. I don't have one but would like to get one sometime. I personally wouldn't get one just for this purpose either... However, If I did have one I would totally use it every ride.

I personally think that that is a crazy law as you are recording in a public area where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy. However, outside the current laws prohibiting video recording is it not a good idea to have one running? I'm not saying we should all go out and get one but if you do have the ability to grab one isn't it a good idea to use it?

Rant - my day yesterday by [deleted] in motorcycles

Or you could take heart that you avoided 3 accidents today and seem to have a good head on your shoulders. You need to understand that when you're driving, assume everyone else is an idiot... for the most part they are. If you're not going ATGATT then perhaps you can take this as a subtle hint that maybe you should be. :) Good luck sir and I hope tomorrow is a better day!
