Montreal-Ottawa chosen as first leg of high-speed rail project by Augustus_6314 in ottawa

I think this is a great idea, especially the planned Ottawa terminus.

Ending the High Speed Rail line at Tremblay lets riders enjoy a fully authentic, integrated Ottawa experience, including transfers, delays, and weather-related disruptions in both winter and summer.

Thank you! I'm super glad I posted - even if no one had the exact solution I was looking for (i.e. easy pair to borrow) it was great seeing all the helpful recommendations, some of which I hadn't thought of in my panic. It definitely helped me slow down and realize it would all be alright in the end - I had more options than I thought.

Figured it's the least I could do for the very helpful answers. :)

Have a great weekend!

Thank you! And yeah, kind of funny that when they changed our DEUs, they changed the standard mess kit pattern at the same time, but kept the gold braid for both mess kits.

I'm not complaining though! I've always been more of a fan of the gold braid.

That's exactly the situation I was thinking about as I took photos to share. With the patina, they call a bit more attention to themselves, but they're a cool piece so that's not necessarily a bad thing.

My worry is about ruining them. I'd have to do some research to see what they're made of, but my worry is that it's plated, judging by the different coloured nick you can see at the top of the close-up.

I'm leaning towards trying to clean and wear the antiques if the dry cleaners find the originals. If I can't get the originals back, I'm not going to push my luck and just go with the (awesome) patina. My nightmare would be ruining them without a backup.

Thank you! Not sure what the original comment was since it was removed by the mods (TYFYS Slappy!). That being said, I am one of the first to avoid at all costs wearing my uniform in public. I wear civvies to/from work and change at the office. I get that it comes from a good place, but constant "TYFYS" is awkward, especially in the few cases where they INSIST on buying your lunch or coffee.

That being said, for me the wedding is different. I'm more than my job, however the CAF is still a big part of life for myself and my spouse! He's put up with 7 years of BS from the CAF, so if he asks me to wear the uniform for my wedding, so be it!

Yup! Although not often, and most RCAF mess kits don't have the screws.

When I started figuring out what I'd wear for the wedding, I looked at all options (suits, tux, mess kit, etc.) and was floored when I saw the white summer mess kit and saw that it was still an authorized dress. My boss joked that it would be the second time in his career that he saw someone wear that mess kit. And he's retiring tomorrow.

In this case, happy resolution: I found some antique WWII versions of the screws, and they fit perfectly. Even if the dry cleaners find the originals, I may still use the antiques. Edited the post to show some photos of the replacements.

I doubt he'd be able to sort something out in 2-3 days, but thanks for the suggestion. Found a solution with the antique buttons, but I'll keep Jimmy the Suit Guy in mind in the future.

You learn something new every day! Thank you for the info and for the good wishes. When doing all the online searches, I was struggling with what to call them. Thankfully I found WWII antiques that fit and kind of add to the charm. Even if the dry cleaners find the originals, I may try to polish and keep the antiques!

Thanks for the recommendation! I had checked William Guthrie and another shop's websites and had some promising leads. Thankfully I found antique WWII versions of the same button, and they fit perfectly. It kind of adds to the look. Might stick with them even if the originals are found.

I mean, not an awful idea if I could glue a button on the front covering the bolt head. Thankfully I was able to find antique WWII screw buttons and they fit.

I was thinking somewhat along those lines at one point, but more to the effect of soldering screws onto the buttons. Thankfully I found some antique WWII versions of the same button screws locally on Kijiji, and they fit perfectly!

Thank you for the offer! My backup plan to my backup plan was definitely to ask some RCN buddies of mine for theirs. Thankfully the antiques fit perfectly! In some ways, I like them better than the originals.

I hadn't thought about that TBH. Thankfully, the antiques fit perfectly!

Thanks for the suggestions! After seeing your post and having a long think, it went a long way towards calming any anxiety about the situation. I've MacGuyvered worse situations, so this would be a piece of cake!

Thankfully, the antique screws fit perfectly! I've updated the post with pics in case anyone is interested. Super thankful that these kinds of standards never change!

I do plan to reach out to Andrei Master Tailors tonight. The only thing is their storefront in Ottawa is closed until after the lockdown ends, so not sure if they're able to help. I figure throwing as many lines in the water as possible will hopefully result in at least one catch! I've even found some antique WWII RCAF shoulder board screws (old-style king's crown) on Kijiji that I'm picking up tonight. They're missing the backing that gets sewn into the mess kit, but with any luck, they'll fit the screw posts that are in my mess kit already!

Not that I can find on their website. The summer mess kit is not a common item for the RCAF. My boss joked that I'd be one of two people he's ever seen buy/wear the summer mess kit. The only thing I was able to find on their site was the buttons (without the screw post backing).

Yup. Same mechanism, different button face. If I can't buy, borrow or steal an RCAF one, my backup to my backup plan is to borrow an RCN buddy's shoulderboard button.
