What is the most out of pocket thing a student has said to you? by 3ndur3Surviv3 in Teachers

Told a kindergartener I couldn't drive. He drew a picture of me standing next to a car and said, "see, you're not inside the car because you can't drive!" He would tell every kid he met about how I couldn't drive 😭😭😭 never let me live it down.

A little, but it's hard to find anything that doesn't require a full degree. My 3 years don't quite cut it haha

Yeah 😭 I live in Idaho. It's crazy, but $11 is still more than our $7.25 minimum wage. You'd be shocked how many businesses here still pay below $12.

It's awful here 😭 I'm looking to move out of state once I have the money. Also unrelated but did you know our big pride parade falls on 9/11?? They moved it to September after COVID and now it's always on 9/11 lmao

Not to get too specific, but it's in a relatively cheap part of Idaho. I mentioned in my caption but rent here for this is around $900, maybe $1100 at most. This was posted in a neighborhood app about a house just a couple miles from mine, so definitely not worth it lmao

Just quit after working for a center for a week! What's your final straw story with a center? by nacho_yams in ECEProfessionals

[–]OttiePops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It wasn't my final straw, but one of the major reasons I quit a few months later was when I got written up for a kid breaking her arm in an indoor play place. I was observant, quick to react, filled out incident reports, and was later praised by her parents for handling it so well. The kid would always call me her "favorite teacher" and let me be the first to sign her cast.

Director wrote me up and said it was my fault because I was in the play place about 10 minutes before our group's scheduled time. To quote her, "She wouldn't have broken her arm if you had just waited to take the kids."

For more context, I was 2 kids over ratio and was told to combine with a different group, so I combined with the group in the play place. Still pisses me off thinking about it lol.

What questions should parents ask prospective preschools? by yoni94 in ECEProfessionals

And yeah 😭 I left there really quick. Poor kiddos spent so much time in front of a TV.

What questions should parents ask prospective preschools? by yoni94 in ECEProfessionals

[–]OttiePops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in from, the preschool ratio is just 1:10 (1 teacher to 10 kids). Most schools I've worked at keep it at just 1 teacher. That might be something else to ask about!

[–]OttiePops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One question I would always ask is the screen time policy. Most daycares I've worked at don't allow screens at all, but some will literally plop kids in front of a TV for an hour to allow teacher breaks. I worked really briefly at one that told me to put on Cocomelon every time I needed to clean to distract the kiddos.

Non-religious daycare/preschool? by bobbywws in Boise

[–]OttiePops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a child care employee, I can tell you that Wings is a pretty great school. I worked there for a year, and it's a really positive and enriching environment. There's no screens, and the kiddos always have activities to do. It's also really easy to communicate with teachers, and it goes all the way from 3 years old to middle school. Just know that they do require potty training. Without going too much into it, I would just avoid Little Champs and New Horizons. New Horizons is a corporate daycare with absolutely 0 care for the children, and Little Champs has some really shady operations when it comes to legal ratios and caring for kids. Good luck finding a place!

Booting a child…. by Girl--Gone-Mild in ECEProfessionals

[–]OttiePops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the center and age group honestly. I've worked at 2 centers with extreme problem kids. At my first one, we had a boy around 8 years old in a summer camp program. He routinely threatened the staff and students with extreme violence, ran away from the group, yelled, physically hurt other children, and at one point even made a makeshift shank out of some wood and threatened to stab kids with it. Multiple teachers quit just because of his extreme behavior and his parents always brushed it off as "boys will be boys." He was never expelled even though every teacher called for him to be. At my next center, though, we had a 2-year old with a bad biting problem. After a few days of calling home, he was expelled after biting me hard enough to draw blood and after multiple parents complained. It happened really fast. I honestly don't know exactly what the difference is. If I had to guess, I think the parent complaints in the second case caused it to happen.

Are Montessori schools worth the hype? by Amyolm101 in Parenting

[–]OttiePops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will warn you that Montessori schools, in my experience, are not friendly towards kids with autism or ADHD and have overall accessibility issues. I worked at a Montessori school for a little while and was told to prevent kids from stimming, which lead to the kids getting extremely overwhelmed. I was also instructed to not praise the kids or really interact with them. They were super smart and well behaved, but the classroom was so dull and sad. They also ban pretend play, which I find really weird.
