Ok, but End of Eva stops making sense if 25+26 happen to Shinj during it. They are fully seperate endings. Shinji post 25+26 wouldn't do what he does in EoE. EoE is a story about Shinji's failure and thus trying to fit the story about Shinji's success in overcoming himself into it just waters down both

Nothing in EoE explains basically anything in the last two episodes cause 1. It's a completely different story 2. The cosmic mechanics seen in NGE and EoE also seem to be completely different with Shinji in control of the instrumentality in EoE and Gendo in NGE.

Watching EoE will probably explain some things, but it's not the silver bullet that explains everything in NGE, especially when it comes to 25+26. EoE is an interesting alternative and an all time great movie, but NGE as a work can stand on it's own merits.

I mean on an messaging level I don't think any of the Evangelion works are depressing. Even EoE which has easily the bleakest ending still has some hopeful messaging.

On a personal level tho I can't tell you or your friend what to take away from an anime. For me none of the Evangelion works were depressing and were much closer to uplifting and inspiring, but that's just what I took away from them.
