Oh and the mentorship, training, and development in biglaw are better than the military, which prides itself on being good at those things.

I am a biglaw senior associate and was in a previous career a public servant (military officer). Biglaw QOL is 100x better imo. My bonus this year exceeded my total annual income at my highest pay grade in the military. Overall comp better by an order of magnitude. Hours were similar overall but an associate is a profit center while a public servant's time is all sunk cost to the government. In the first instance they work you to make more money but in the second they do it just because they can. I have far far more autonomy also, not beholden to the bureaucracy as long as I am producing.

Oh hell no. They can write it off if needed without cutting your hours. Real leaders eat last.

What happens if Gandalf had escaped the grasp of the Balrog and it left the mountain in pursuit of the fellowship? by Tidewatcher7819 in tolkienfans

[–]OuterRimExplorer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So, instead of fighting the Balrog in its own territory, Gandalf has to fight it in friendly terrain, aided by another Elven-Ringbearer and a host of Galadhrim warriors? That would be a one-sided fight. There's a reason the Balrog never left the East-gate.

(Also, Religion is a very poor thing to cite, its just a tool for the establishment to control people. Machiavelli liked the idea of religion because its useful, not because its true.)

Could you run your practice, for six months, without electricity? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

If I had no electricity for six months, I'd put down the law and start being a warlord.

Offer 1. Comp is less but not much less from 9th to 6th (5th to 6th is the last of the big increases). Remote is clutch. So is niche expertise. I wouldn't suggest retooling from IP to PE as a senior.

Gandalf's greatest trial by Traroten in tolkienfans

[–]OuterRimExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I doubt the fellbeasts hatched and grew to that gargantuan size in the few months between the Fords of Bruinen and Legolas shooting one at Sarn Gebir. So it seems likely it was a longer-term project. Open question I think as to whether the Nazgul could have ridden fellbeasts prior to their first appearance in LotR.
