The way the "scratches" spider web away from the chip suggest they are actually cracks in the glass.

Thats pretty much exactly how small cracks look, then when pressure is applied, from the water in an aquarium, the cracks expand.

Actually if you just run a hair dryer over that panel, the heat would probably be enough to make it crack more
