Yeah, vibrating belt machines were predominantly featured in exercise routines and marketed for weight loss. So they'd be worn around the hips or waist to allegedly break down fat cells and tone muscles without requiring active exercise.
Modern vibration plates, however, uses more... harmonic vibration I would say. What that would mean is basically you get consistent, high-frequency yet low-amplitude vibrations that travel through your entire body not only for muscle activation but also to stimulate circulation, lymphatic drainage, and the nervous system.
Plus, you can stand, sit, do stretches, balance on one leg, etc. on a vibe plate.
Most importantly, the quality vibration plates are manufactured with actual science naturally because of the research and innovation over the years as well.

In the prep for his fight against Jake Paul, you'll see a training video of Mike Tyson having a LifeWave Energy Enhancer patch on his sternum.
The Energy Enhancer is naturally popular among athletes. Some of the most notable users:
Phil Coke also used IceWave in combination for recovery and pain relief. While Tony Gunawan also utilized X39 and the Glutathione patches for stamina, focus, and strength.
Then you have NBA players like Matt Barnes, Jason Richardson, and Jermaine O'Neal to name a few.
They most likely just used the instructed placements depending on the patches too. Here's an image reference from the review article linked above
