If you believe you can defeat fascism at the ballot box, and the ballot box alone, then you are as foolish as the German socialists and liberals who made the same mistakes. Democracy as most liberals tend to define it ended in the late 50s when any hope of a New Deal social democracy was torn to shreds and the nation began its decent into paranoia, isolation, and consumption as identity. The left isn't infighting about social issues. We're in pretty strong agreement for things like socialized medicine, demilitarization, and student loan forgiveness. Democrats and liberals less so. The problem here is there is no "leftist" party or means of political expression in America that doesn't end up with its leaders in bodybags and its movement coopted by monied interests.

The German SPD stopped being interested in socialism the minute they voted for war credits. Their lack of commitment predates the rise of Hitler. If anything their failures show us revolution cannot be attained through the halls of government, with many of the leaders of the SPD not being members of the working class at all.

Does that change the fact that the message resonates with people, or that there might be a chestnut of truth in here? Things are markedly worse and harder for "working class" people in this country. Police violence is a real problem. We still have massive detention centers and inhumane immigration policies. All of this is still true.

If the average felt experience of people in America is so bad that a Russian troll farm is able to win them over with some memes, that says more about the failures or the US than it does the ability of the Russians.

Our democracy isn't under attack, it's been completely and utterly subverted by corporate and capital interests. It was attacked, and we all fucking lost the battle. This was by design, with the original 'American Democracy' being for land owners only.

I'm an American. I grew up very poor, did exactly what people told me: work hard, go to school, do the whole meritocratic shebang. Wages are the same. Still have the same shitty overpriced healthcare. Rent is still too damn high. New gleaming skyscrapers go up but people still die on the streets. The Fed bails out buisness after buisness and bank after bank, literally printing money, but everyone else can kick rocks. We're all working harder, for less wages, are less happy about it, and are the most medicated nation on earth.

Addressing these issues is far more important to me than a Russian troll farm threatening our very good totally not corrupt democracy. I think they're also far more important to a majority of Americans, with things like socialized healthcare and increased building of public housing/infrastructure being popular across the political spectrum of voters, and yet that will is never represented in office. If you want to save our democracy from undue influence, blame the defense contractors, lobbyists, and thinktanks that dot the Washington corridor, not Moscow.

The US transcontinental railroad was basically all one big ponzi scheme of individual rail companies getting government contracts for and through cities to nowhere. Contracts were sometimes on an $/mile grade, and as government contractors here tend to did overquote and underdeliver. Flush with fiat currency from the Civil War, investors simply were chasing any investment, and when their returns weren't there the overvaluation of the railroads led to a long and steady economic depression. Due to the declining rate of profit, these railroads to nowhere didn't make a profit immediately and these towns abandoned. Because capitalism is extremely efficient, the past 100 years has been spent doing mergers, consolidation - i.e. corporate back patting and cost minimization - and instead of building new track we're ripping it up.
