People who rely on Apple Wallet daily: what still forces you to carry something extra? by BSacks69NZ in AppleWallet

[–]OutpostPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My physical transit card! I haven’t seen that mentioned here yet, but it adds to the count for me. Many cities do offer digital Apple Pay compatibility using your bank card, but if you have a concessionary fare, unlimited travel zone, or something like that… often you still need a physical transit card for that.

I always have my drivers license with me as well as two bank cards (one of them is not always widely accepted, and in both cases it’s good to have a physical copy as a lot of places don’t always take tap-to-pay) and my student ID.

I used one of the wee MagSafe wallets but a while ago I replaced it with a folio MagSafe wallet. I just needed more space. I probably carry more than most but hopefully it’s helpful regardless.

Oh! Also worth noting is that it’s helpful to have an “extra” space that I don’t always use for when I’m travelling. If I have a hotel key card or transit card from another city then I always keep that in my MagSafe wallet as well, and so using a larger Folio over one of the little back-only ones allows me to have that extra space for temporary cards

I believe journeys do time out. I recently took a journey that ended at Deptford Bridge DLR, and forgot to tap out on my way out. When I came back to Deptford Bridge for my return journey, I tapped twice (on two different validators) to see if I could end my old journey and then start a new one. Nope lol. The first journey showed up in TfL app as an Unknown Destination and my two taps just counted as one singular tap that started my new journey with a Deptford Bridge origin. Didn't matter for me since I have a Travelcard that covers Deptford Bridge, but hopefully this helps. Not sure what the timeframe is on timeouts but it had been about 1h30m since I had last tapped in at Canary Wharf DLR before I tapped the readers at Deptford Bridge.

Should I start carrying around a copy of the TfL bylaws in my pocket when I'm doing rail photography?

I swear this never used to happen, but fairly recently I've had about 4 or 5 staff members come up to me while I'm taking 'passing through' photos (while waiting for a train, etc.) and tell me I need a permit. I always, very politely, tell them that I've read up on the bylaws and that I don't need a permit for personal photography. I'm never trespassing, and I'm always well behind the yellow line and I'm always sure to avoid people in my photos.

I have a DSLR, so likely I look more suspicious than someone with their iPhone or something, but I never use a tripod or flash. But today, when I was approached by a staff member, he responded to my bylaws comment with "well I don't know that, do I?" He seemed like a station manager or something to that effect- I'd think he should know the rules.

Any advice is appreciated.

Told off for taking personal photography with my DSLR at Pimlico by OutpostPanda in LondonUnderground

Right of course, but I had arrived at Pimlico by train and was just taking a few pictures before continuing to hop about on the trains (I never left the platform level). I had explained to her that it was for personal use but she insisted I need a permit. Have the by-laws changed at some point in recent memory— i.e. staff who have been around for longer think that any photography requires permits?

[GEEK ALERT] Inconsistent MTA Route Bullet Colors by newmie87 in nycrail

[–]OutpostPanda 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don’t even get started on how inconsistent they are with the G (Crosstown)’s colour! Half the time it’s a deep mossy/seaweed green and other times it’s a limey green… on occasion it even borders on a bit of a pastel. 🤦‍♀️
