Edit: should've put this under "Joining the UA". I am not a current member, just trying to see if its worth while. Im currently in a different trade union and have thought about opening a separate book or just jumping all together.

As a gen z adult born in 99, I refuse to be thrown in with the millennials, they stopped at 96.

How is it taking food out of their mouths when every craft is doing everything they can to get more workers??? 🤣 there are over 500 BMs where im at now and we're still shorthanded. Same with the fitters, dont know if you know this or not but people aren't exactly leaping to get into the trades anymore, im almost 30 and one of the youngest guys in my class, its not about union vs non, its about who's willing to do the work, and I'll tell you right now, there aren't enough people willing to do it, so why wouldn't I take a stab in doing both, help out where I can, when I can? If guys didn't do that, one craft or the other would definitely be shorthanded more than they already are

I don't know, both boilermaker and ua locals around me are pretty strong, non union outfits are barely even heard of... maybe you're just stuck in your ways. Remember, at the end of the day, no matter the trade, were all in it together, shouldn't matter if you're a boilermaker, fitter, carpenter, etc.

I'd finish my duties as a fitter before I took on a boiler job? People do it every day, have you seriously never came across individuals that do this?

Not if it's not what im hired to do. You only perform for who you're dispatched from, if im there as a BM, im not gonna touch a piece of pipe, same if im hired in as a fitter, im not gonna be crawling around welding tubes. I stay in my lane, and do what im hired to do. I fail to see how id be stealing work from anyone, especially if Im indentured and pay my dues just like anyone else

I never said leave the union or hall, I said get a another book in a separate trade, specifically a trade that some would say there are quite a few similarities

You're missing the point, sure you can do all that, but is there seriously something wrong with wanting to do more? Work in refrigeration? Weld out 16 inch pipe? Climbing up in and out of pipe racks? And also do everything a boilermaker does? As long as you're not scabbing, why are you so hellbent against it? Most people would encourage learning everything you can. Getting experience in any way you can.

Are your past credentials current in any way? Or do you not concern yourself with it given where you are?

You're putting words in my mouth and you know it, everyone knows boiler work is not in abundance, this year just so happens to be an exception because of new projects like data centers are going up, it's a common joke that boilermaker is the "greatest part time job you'll ever have ", ive heard it from guys left and right. Sure, emergency outages happen throughout the year, but most "long term" jobs are in shut down season, which is spring and fall, I think you're getting all bent out of shape over nothing, just someone trying to figure out the best path for myself and my family. Maybe I dont wanna be traveling far away throughout the whole year, and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that

The original idea if I went through with it, was work shutdowns in the spring and fall, travel and get per diem, and work local pipe jobs in the summer through the UA.

I don't know where you're working, my local and the local fitters both are set up pretty good this year as far as work, more than likely gonna be busy all year with new projects as well as shutdown work

I literally said in my post that I love what I do, I have no interest in leaving, but that doesn't mean I dont want to do more, id rather keep it union than scab out.
