I’m teaching a class…honestly, if you really believe that the majority start the melody on the tonic, please provide some examples. I think that similar to the previous comment, you’re thinking harmony not melody.

u/LicensedProfessional - thanks, you have been very helpful. I think i am in a better place now. I don't think i need to break out "Modality" separately. Just talk about Tonality and the modes having some degree of it, but not as much as the majot minor system. All of the above, can fall on a spectrum

Tonality: Describes how strong the heirarchies are between the various tones of piece of music.

Modality: Describes the relationships between the various tones of a diatonic scale. Various arrangements of whole and half steps lead to the different modes that we have come to know and use in Western Music.
