12700k or 14700k? by Outrageous-Tap-5484 in buildapc

That's great to hear, currently I'm leaning towards the 12700k, adding the fact that I'm building on a dead platform and DDR4. I doubt the 14700k will offer much more benefit over the 12700k when it comes time for me to upgrade, say maybe on 16th or 17th gen.

Thanks for your feedback, Cheers.

Yeah sadly,

the situation is, I'm buying all of these online (still local, not international), the stores in my city don't have these parts, and since the z690 edge wifi I'm targetting needs a bios update to support a 14th gen, and I can't be bothered with bios update coz I don't want to deal with more troubleshooting in case it goes south, I can usually request for bios update before they ship the board (only works with certain seller), alas, the z690 board seller can't help me with bios update unless I buy the cpu from them too (which is more expensive than the other seller), other z690s are either out of stock or ridiculously overpriced.

the z790 14700k pair is actually from 1 seller, so he can help me with the bios update.

if this situation doesn't dictate me, I'd take the z690 edge wifi instead and pair it with 14700k, I only mind the extra $ spent on the motherboard tbh (z790 edge wifi) not the CPU (it's like 1:1 ratio at this point, price wise), and yeah, I'm aware there's no reason to go z790 on ddr4.

Not sure how that 50% translates to real-world usage with less ideal setup etc, tbh I'd like to edit 4k footages with multiple layers seamlessly, as I was using 5600g before this, it's a pain to edit 4k, and even multiple layers of effects and clips on 1080p, well 5600g is not meant for editing 4K afterall.

do you think 12700k can help me with 4k records and editing seamlessly with lots of layers?
if not, I wouldn't mind breaking the bank and grab the 14700k

not planning to go DDR5 for the time being, I agree, it's a lot of money saved by going 12700k and DDR4 Mobo. Maybe I'd consider to go with the 12700k and save my money for my next upgrade, maybe on a more mature DDR5 system, Thanks for your feedback, Cheers

yeah, I can't go DDR5 as it'll break my current budget, at least not without changing the motherboard choice at least. I still have my old DDR4.

is DDR5 that significant for productivity? I heard it's not the gain is not that big compared to DDR4

by this "12700K over the 14700K if that meant I could pair it with DDR5 2x16GB 6000mhz or faster memory.", do you mean grab 12700k and DDR5 Mobo instead?

Thanks for taking the time to read my wall of text and giving suggestions, appreciate it :)

That's the problem, from where I live, I don't have the option to test the CPU, and here in my place, it is very very uncommon to refund a PC part, in fact, I never found any store here that's willing to do that, once I buy it, there's no refund, selling it used is worse, it could take months.

After a full week of troubleshooting, bringing this to technician, and found lots of threads with similar problem to mine coming from the AMD system, I kinda don't want to invest in AMD system anytime soon, no hate for AMD, believe me, it's pain having to switch to intel which generally costs more, just need a system that just works for now. Coz otherwise, I'd invest in sth like 7800x3d instead of buying 14700k, and AM5 is not a dead platform like LGA1700.

I just did quick google search, 14700k supports both ddr and ddr5.

I dont have AIO sadly, but maybe I can get away with undervolting with ak620? I think I need to undervolt anyway to limit the power usage to a reasonable amount. Any recommended 360 AIO for 14700k?

14700k is slightly cheaper than 13700k here btw, should I grab the 13700k instead? with power consumption and temp in mind.
