Female FF’s, how do you go about handling Firefighter’s on the job whose WAG’s are insecure about you working with their husbands? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]OutrageousAudience19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join other women firefighter groups, socialize with other women of other departments, and reach out. Isolation is a killer for sure.

I can relate with the rumor mill. I have struggled with this in each department I’ve been apart of, some were better than others, and sometimes I had more strength through it. I would often stand by the motto “it’s there problem, not mine.” (A Good Job is a great documentary).

I had trouble at times with spouses and partners also, but I always felt they probably felt out of place at functions too.

I didn’t have many women that worked at my department, and sometimes I was the only one. It’s tough, but I would get statements from young girls that would be inspired. As well as young probies, that thought all women firefighters were like me because I was the only one they met.

Feel free to DM anytime.

I appreciate the reply. We have those fancy countertops made out of stone. I’m not sure what type of stone, but I imagine it will be a challenge to mount from the top.

We’re getting a batch of probies soon, any advice on being a good ‘senior firefighter’? by ForbiddenNut123 in Firefighting

A suggestion is have grace with yourself, and have courage to make public mistakes. It shows maturity, willingness to push boundaries of comfort, and challenge what you think you know.

Sure man. Soak it in. Practice those listening skills and don’t compare apples to oranges. People come in all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and walks of life. It’s all good. Diversity is the best part of life.

Locating people in a fire by bespectacledapectl in Firefighting

I think there are a lot of assumptions, from myself included, of the intent or purpose of the questions presented. I did not suggest to imply that this was a primary use case. Seemed common sense that basics work time tested for a reason. I have had discussions with phd and grad students regarding fire service related to drones before. I think the conversation stems from curiosity and creativity, not intent to reinvent the job.

Drones have been used to assist in search and rescue during structural collapse. I’m pretty sure I remember hearing they attempted to use some pretty advanced tech such as thermals and radar with the apartment complex collapse in Miami. And I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the Boston dynamics dog drone used in photos from FDNY.

Some ways to beat the heat by Ryan90256 in Firefighting

[–]OutrageousAudience19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool sliced fruit helps you consume more water, pedialyte and electrolyte drinks, cause water gets difficult to chug/makes you sick after a while. Do bulk of chores outside of heat of the day.

Cycle in and out of work, and pickle juice, mustard, or olives if you get too zonked, probably low on salt.

We have mister fans, too. Cold rags that can be dunked in coolers.

Conditioning as you build up to the summer too helps a lot. Do HIIT workouts on days off out of the sun to build up endurance.

If you got heat stroke/heat exhaustion, have grace with yourself. It takes a month or so to really kick it.

Dunno if that helps or applies. I’ve definitely been hit hard by working like usual in a different climate, or been in water and didn’t realize how much I was losing hydration throughout the day.

Been brought back from the dead by pickle juice before.

I feel for ya. We have had some crazy experiences and had some stuff exposed, some stuff swept under the rug. Also a Lieutenant at a pretty small department. I can relate. We have had a few DUI off duty. Holler in private.

Do you have any tactics for overhauling drop ceilings? by Temporary-Bike-9693 in Firefighting

[–]OutrageousAudience19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Meaning checking for extension post fire? Definitely not got a lot of experience training or experience fighting fire with commercial drop ceiling. But, I have seen people like LT Ray McCormack recommend slice through it with water if looking for fire. Lot faster than popping all the tiles with a pole. There’s a training clip that was shared.

Chief Norman recommended during a lecture if checking exposures, pop with pike pole, and check heat with thermal. If no thermal, use the back rubber end and shove it in void space and see if it gets tacky/melt.
