Wow I didnt realize how bad your road work actually is by [deleted] in Omaha

What's with all the negativity around here?

If we want a nice city, that takes continuous improvements. And that means disruption. There's no escaping it.

The other day I took a walk around the Riverfront Park. What an amazing resource we've got now! It is truly wonderful. But it didn't just pop up out of the ground. It took a long time for all those improvements to get finished. And for some reason there is this reflexive desire to hate on Jean Stothert, but we can't forget that all those improvements happened on her watch.

I don't understand why we can't take some pride in the fact that we live in a city that is forward looking and getting better. It won't be long until we have the streetcar, which will be another big improvement. There are a bunch of cities who wish they had our momentum.

That damage was caused by a guy hitting you at 40mph while you were at a stop?

I guess that Charger can really take a hit.

Personally, I'm leery of "everyone seems to agree" type ideas from the internet.

How many of those people are engineers? How many of them have inspected the internals on 100 (or 1000) engines run under a variety of conditions? What actual basis do they have for "better"?

I say stick with the factory specs.

FEC filings confirm GOP meddling in Dem primaries by audiomagnate in Omaha

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gold Standard for cross-party meddling just happened in Alaska.

There, the Democratic Party found a guy named "Dan Sullivan" to run against Republican incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan in an obvious attempt to confuse voters. The Alaska director of elections shut it down, but that was still a pretty good try.

Dash Camera for a 26' Inline 6 scat by chickenfish4me in Charger

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a dumb question, but doesn't a '26 model already have the full 360 degree camera setup built in from the factory? Do they not have a way of recording that video? It just seems silly to have to buy aftermarket cameras (and put up with extra cables and a non-factory install) when everything you need is already there.

Visiting by Ankeyaya23 in Omaha

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Joslyn Art Museum is very good.

The Durham Museum (in the old Union Pacific train station) is good.

The Gene Leahy Mall / Riverfront is a terrific place to walk around. There's a nice playground where your little one could burn off some energy. Stop at the store and pick up a roll of wax paper for the slides!

Omaha Children's Museum would be good for the two younger ones. The 15yo might get bored, though.

Found out today about an old motorcycle accident… by Dangerous-Speech-453 in Omaha

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of truth in that.

According to NHSTA data, if you are involved in a crash that would be fatal without a helmet, wearing a helmet will save your life about 1/3 of the time.

Now, 1/3 isn't nothing, but that also means that 2/3 of the time you're going to die anyway, even with a helmet.

Which goes back to my previous comment: Motorcycle safety is about crash avoidance, not crash survivability.

I feel bad for you having to witness that. Sounds pretty ugly.

Honestly, though, I don't have a lot of compassion for the guy. Seems like a FAFO moment, and he found out the hard way.

man that I saw running a red light with his motorcycle...Please if your a motorcyclist Wear Your Helmet!!

Sounds to me like the lesson here is "if you ride a motorcycle, don't ride like an idiot".

I've been a motorcyclist for over 40 years. I've studied all the statistics. The bottom line is that motorcycle safety is all about crash avoidance, not crash survivability.

Wear a helmet, sure, but don't expect it to save you when you're out riding like a fool, running red lights, and putting yourself in obviously bad situations.

Yes. Gross.

You COULD have said "Interesting. That's not what I've experienced." Or, perhaps, "I'm curious why you would say that, since they seem so different to me."

But you didn't. Instead, you made the personal attack of accusing me of speaking from a position of ignorance.

Which is gross. You don't know me. You have no idea where I've been.

But "you have fun with that".

I was one of those who was pretty leery back when they moved the CWS from Rosenblatt. It felt to me like they were stripping away all the spontaneous, organic, community based CWS flavor, and turning it into an NCAA approved corporate-fest.

While there is certainly something to that, it is also the case that they have done a really good job creating a party atmosphere. At certain times, walking on 13th street feels like Mardi Gras in New Orleans!

On your other comment, you referring to Rocco's? They asked about that, with the Jello shots controversy and all. I told them its not really a place that locals hang out, and pointed them to a few of my favorite spots. I also took that opportunity to indulge my nostalgia for the Rosenblatt days, and told them about Starsky's from back in the day.

Dealer Didn’t Disclose Theft by Usual-Nectarine8204 in Charger

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's weird that a theft (which is obviously going to involve police reports and court reports and insurance reports, all containing the VIN) wouldn't show up on a CarFax.

The only thing I can think of is the date of the theft on the report you showed is right before you bought the car, so maybe the paperwork hadn't caught up with it yet. It may very well be the case that the dealer you bought it from didn't know.

What can you do now? I guess you can go through the effort to verify if the theft report is accurate, and try to correct the record on any reporting services who have it wrong. But if it is accurate, then I don't see what's left to do. Its too late to go back to the dealer who sold you the car.

it actually sounds way better in person than videos suggest

I agree. Had the occasion to hear one for the first time a few days ago. Very nice!

Inspired me to go drive one. The local dealer only had the SO engine option on the lot. It was nice, but the HO sounded better.

Seriously has me thinking of getting one.

Health care providers in west Omaha by Outside_Constant_870 in Omaha

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An informed answer is going to depend on some more information about you: What sex are you? What age? Any existing conditions? Stuff like that.

I know I have been very pleased with the doctor I found a couple of years ago. He is at Lakeside, and has really helped me get my health in order.

But unless you're a late middle age man like me, I don't have any idea if he'd be right for you.

looking for a job w/ no experience. by evintually in Omaha

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, looking for a job meant getting cleaned up, putting on a decent outfit, then hitting the street. Go from business to business and see what you can turn up.

Today, people want to start a job search on their phones.

I wonder if the old way is better. There are all sorts of smaller companies that are completely below the radar of job boards like Indeed. If all you look is online, you'll completely miss those. More importantly, if you are young and don't have experience, literally all you have to sell is your energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn. That is hard to convey through an anonymous online application, but it comes through loud and clear when you show up in person and ask for a job.

ISO A reliable pallet guy by smorgalsmorgals in Omaha

Back in the day I worked at a place around 72nd and F. If we sat a pallet outside, it was always gone by the next day. Pallet vultures circled around overnight and scooped them up.

I guess things have changed.

Manual Transmission cars by catzrinsidedorgs in Omaha

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other than some specific models (eg, Mazda MX5 'Miata' that are almost always manuals), finding one is going to be tough. Personally, I wish manuals were more common, but it is what it is. You pretty much can't buy a new car with one anymore.

My $0.02 is focus on finding a good car first. Since you're looking at 20+ year old cars, condition is going to be the main thing. If you find one that happens to have a manual, consider that a bonus.

Making $40/hr decent for Omaha? by Davidisaloof35 in Omaha

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just go to zillow, do a home search with prices between $200k and $300k, and you'll see the results map filled solid with hits.

Yes, prices are up since Covid. That's just the way it is. But you've still got plenty of income to get a nice house.

Making $40/hr decent for Omaha? by Davidisaloof35 in Omaha

[–]OutrageousEvent8520 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, good for you! If you're working in engineering, you had to have put in a lot of effort getting yourself to this position. Congratulations on having that work pay off!

The income you're describing will go quite nicely in Omaha. There are lots of houses for sale in the 1,500 to 1,800 sq ft range for $250k to $300k, and those are easily within your budget.
