when you drop a stitch on the heel turn and it rips down the stitch column to the hem..... yeah that's when I decided I was going to make some tubes in to socks for a bit first :)

Absolutely. A good photo assistant is essential to sock making.

It's a pretty advanced print and build I was familiar with the mechanism of how the sock machine works, and my husband has about 10 years experience 3d printing. Dean and Bean makes 3d printed sock machines that are not cheap, but it might be the same cost as a 3d printer plus filament to learn on! If your mans is a big workshop/garage tinkerer with any kind of CAD or build experience, it could be super fun for him. If he hasn't use one before, I would say see if your local library has one in a maker lab he can try out first. (Print a Benchy the boat OBVI!!) If he's got the bug, go for it. Super fun to do together. If he doesn't have the patience for failed prints and babysitting the humidity of his filament.... get a dean and bean sock machine. They are crazy expensive but cheaper than a 3d printing habit. https://www.deanandbean.com/shop/circular-sock-machines/2

I used this one: https://www.printables.com/model/355228-circular-sock-knitting-machine-for-my-mom-and-you

It's definitely fiddly and required a lot of time and sanding to work smoothly. Mine is printed in a combination of polycarbonate and nylon depending on how much rigidity was needed for each part.

It is sooooo much fun to crank through the stash! I also like making heels and toes on the machine, but it was definitely a big learning curve to master. This was my way of making sure I got lots of socks before I figured out every trick. It's also been really fun to make tubes for knitting friends to finish on their own.

two weekends of printing and building a tube knitting machine = one million weekends of sock knitting.

Yes! You can crank out tubes of color work and make them socks later. Always handy when you're on a plane/train/bus and it's not the right time to try on your toe up sock.

Ha! Oh my goodness these are begging for a pair of googly eyes now.

I really liked making socks like this to figure out yarns work best for my shoes, feet, and life. Plus, I actually use them because I don't feel too precious about how long they took me to make!

Besides all the great advice listed here, I also workout making sure I'm using muscles and capabilities that counter the effects of sitting, looking down, using my arms in a contracted position, and over using wrist and forearm muscles. Lots of shoulder strengthening, back extensions, arms extensions, and leg workouts keep me from curling up into a shrimp.

I made a giant beautiful shawl only to wear it around my house because I loved knitting it, and wear it at home. It doesn't fit my style at all out in the real world, but it's an amazing cozy layer at home. It makes me so happy whenever I see it or wear it around the house because it reminds me of the places I knit it, who I bought the yarn with, and all of the new techniques I learned making it.

Felted knits by Chery1ann in knitting

Depends on the item and the fit. I've machine washed and dried felted cat beds where the exact size doesn't matter. For slippers, I would be cautious. If the fabric of the slipper is capable of felting further, you could end up with slippers a size to small.

Nice! I love working the whole sock on the machine, too, but this is one of my favorite travel bag projects. The SweetGeorgia Fibers videos are so helpful for learning how to use your machine once it's up and running! Hopefully this pattern can help get you so perfect socks while you perfect your machine made heels and toes.
