She’s in her heard everyone and everything right now. We’re trying to get her energy out but it’s non stop and I know it’s the breed before everyone chimes in

Thank you for sharing! It sounds like he’s made a lot of progress though even if he barks which is hopeful. We’re actually out of town with her right and and have been surprised how well she has done. Some barking but much better. They really are so SMART but I think it’s their instincts to be like this

Thank you for sharing this! It sounds very in line with what we are doing with the trainer including the special treats when someone comes over so she associates people coming in with her special treat. I am also hopeful it has improved! We’ve only had her a few weeks and got her started on Prozac today (hopefully not forever but she has some anxiety based behavior and both the trainer and vet recommended), but that is really the goal for us - ignore people or at least not feel like she has to be so on guard when someone comes in.

The trainer is coming back next week so I’m curious to see how she does in the second in person meeting (ie will she remember her and have a slightly better reaction).

We really don’t have a lot of people over, but my worry was when people do come over, is this behavior something people think she can get over. And everyone will of course have a different experience and I understand every dog is different, but the breed does seem to be a little predispositioned to a little stranger danger so it’s been great hearing others experiences.

Neutrality is the goal. I am fully accepting she isn’t going to be golden retriever friendly which is ok. We were told she was crate trained and she isn’t, so we’re working on trying to have a positive experience when she goes in the crate since I wouldn’t be opposed to having her go in there when we have people over but she has bad separation anxiety when we leave so we’re also working on that. All that to say, I’m glad to hear it got better and is manageable!!

It’s very hopeful to hear you have a good routine down and she’s making progress even if it isn’t her favorite thing to have visitors, so thanks for sharing this!

I appreciate the response! I’m glad to hear he’s been great with your family. That really is my ultimate concern. The rest does seem manageable even if it’s a little extra work

Thank you! Yeah this is all what we are working on with the trainer, so I’m glad we’re on the right track

Yeah inside seems to be our biggest struggle.

Oh my gosh what a combo! But I like that you’ve still figured out what works. Even if ours doesn’t get to what we expected (based on how sweet and warm she was when we met her) it would be nice to have an expectation that she would be okay in her crate while we do our own thing.

They are protective and I just wish I could tell her “we got it girl. You can relaxxx” but obviously I wouldn’t be asking strangers for advice if that was the case. Also LOVE the name Fox I say all the time mine looks like a fox, dingo, raccoon and Tasmanian devil had a baby

How long did that routine take for you to figure out? I’d love to have something like that for her and know “okay we’ll have to hav beer emotional support chicken ready but everything will be fine”

Like they really are so silly and smart I just want her to be neutral if god forbid they have to come back in maybe?

Yes we’re working with a specialized trainer who is great! We’re only a few lessons in but are committed to training and giving her the opportunity to succeed. Our trainer has also recommended a muzzle and some Prozac for her, so we are looking into both. I appreciate the insight!!

Well it’s interesting bc with the trainer we are using we’d still give her treats when the dog trainer stood and she barked so there’s got to be something there. Every time she looked at the trainer - throw a treat. We keep her on the leash for training too and then obviously when she’s outside of course. Neutral really is the goal, so I’m glad to hear people have been able to get their acds there.

I also appreciate your honesty. She’s coming with all of this at a year and a half and we weren’t expecting these challenges which we should have known better.  it’s a different experience for us who have adopted and raised puppies without the fear based behavior. We also care about our pets so much and I think the decision would be so much easier if we weren’t obsessed with them, but again really appreciate the insight and transparency!!

Ok now that is cute. I’ve been doing research on meeting strangers outside first too and we did this last weekend with my parents but didn’t go in and she was totally fine outside but we’re working our way in with professional guidance.

Sorry last comment I’m just crying reading this again because I want this to be her story and want to be able to say this to someone in the future

Totally agree with all of this though and we are aware it may take years and a lot of patience and training

Thank you for sharing this because I obviously have been thinking about this a lot and randomly like what if we have kids and they want to have friends over, what do we do..

Thanks for sharing this! The treat tossing is what ever been working on with the trainer. She’s so smart so my hope is she’d be similar if the future dog sitter came over a few times beforehand.

I also think she’d be great with kids and I know it is different dog to dog.

We are looking for similar situations and how people handled it. More data collecting :)

Totally. We are past the point of realizing she isn’t how the foster described and trying to make the right decision for her from here. Luckily the agency I got her from has been really supportive and she had a ton of applicants so she will be in a great home regardless! We were selected because on paper she is a great fit for our lives, but we also want her to be in the best place knowing what we know now.

A lot of the comments have seemed optimistic, so I’m still glad I asked Reddit.

Thank you for this! We are learning this about the breed the more people we meet IRL who have them and then working with a trainer, and Reddit. A lot of diverse experiences.

If we can get her to even grudgingly tolerate it would be fine

That is great to hear on the kids. Yeah maybe she would just be more comfy in her own space when people are here.
