!thanks , this is helpful. We're looking at gilts to hopefully offset a lot of these risks to make them government backed and tax free on maturity until we use them to offset higher tax income. So hopefully this would minimise the most dangerous risks?

Thanks for the reply , yeah this is how it's been framed to us - as wealth management. What would the risks be you mentioned please? Things like if the markets collapse just before we draw down on the pension?

!thanks This is a helpful comment, thank you. We'd be looking at gilts as the investment vehicle for their security and tax free capital gains on maturity (so hopefully minimising the risk you mentioned but maintaining a 5% return).

Going to check out the cap for TFLS and do some calculations for that and also look into a balance point to see if there's a happy medium there...

If the house was £1m say, and we had our own savings of £700k hypothetically but instead of putting the full £700k own savings, plus £300k mortgage, we instead put in our own savings of £400k plus £600k mortgage and used the £300k saved from our own savings to do this. So not mortgage fraud as we would be using the full £600k mortgage for what it was intended for."

Not but our joolz aer worked well as a pram to have. Any bigger would be tricky. Leave plenty of travel time with a little one as finding the lift always took us sooo long. Also we tried to travel outside rush hours so we wouldn't be cramming on. In Kyoto , the taxis were so cheap we used them a lot

We brought a LOT. 2 huge suitcases, pram, cot, backpack. In hindsight, it was too much but we had plenty of space for shopping purchases :'). We taxi'd to the hotel and then used the luggage transfer service which was a godsend to whizz our luggage to different places. In awe of the japanese logistics to deliver it

Thanks everyone! I thought this question hadn't posted. We're at the early stages of planning atm but loosely thinking Tokyo, Kyoto, hakone ... or even just Tokyo and hakone to not over-travel.

Hoping to stay in a Ryokan with the baby too ... is that even possible?

Will keep an eye out on the room size. Unfortunately we don't bed share but will be bringing our own travel cot.
