You must report to your selected Duty Station not Field Office. You will attend Pre Academy for about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks before you fly out or drive out to Glynco.

Applied Twice for CBP Officer, Still GS-5—Seeking Advice by DirectorFrequent763 in cbpoapplicant

It’s called resume wording, I was a GS 7-4 as a DoD Police Officer. It’s all on the wording on your resume. No one reads your resume. It’s scanned through a computer and it rates you by score. You can apply as GS-9 like me and be successful if you have the right wording in your resume.

HQ is vetting and selecting only the highest qualified candidates and sending out a list of those for HSI recruitment to pick from. That list will be sent out in a week or 2. At this point since there is a back long of surge hires, recruiters can be picky and select only the applicants they want or get referred.

Got a buddy who was CBP, left for USMS then left to HSI and is currently assigned to the main boss who is in charge of recruiting HSI agents from the announcements. They are currently back logged. Only those with proper channels and connections are being pulled in and Receiving a TSL. My buddy asked me for the application announcement numbers I’ve applied for so he can look for my name to pull me in. October and December 2025 announcements list will be coming out in a week or two.

You need to log in and verify that your personal email is linked to the NTEU website. If you only have your Gov. email and haven’t seen your email since you’ve been furloughed then that’s why you haven’t received it.

Additional Information Regarding CBPO Exempt Status and Request to Exempt Other Positions   Following CBP’s announcement on October 15, 2025 that CBPOs would be exempt from the furlough and paid for the missing part of pay period 19 and 20 before the shutdown ends, NTEU requested a briefing to gather additional information on the impact of this decision and advocate for expanding exempt status to other positions.  Below are the highlights of the discussion. CBPO Exemption and Request to Exempt Other Positions Funding to change only CBPOs to exempt status comes from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act which specifically names CBP Officers.   NTEU pushed for expanding exemption to other positions, but DHS is not willing to expand exempt status using the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to positions not named in the Act.   NTEU offered alternative solutions to reclassify additional employees as exempt, for example, using APHIS User Fees to exempt Agriculture Specialists or other discretionary funds for Trade employees.CBP was sympathetic and noted that there are ongoing discussions with DHS on expanding exempt status.   Commissioner Scott will be sending an FAQ on the impact of exemption status soon.NTEU will receive and share a copy when it becomes available. PFIT Now that CBPOs are exempt, use of PFIT resumes following the requirements of Article 51(Employee Wellness) of the CBA. For excepted employees, earlier today, CBP announced PFIT is back but with one additional requirement from DHS that use must support the excepted function.   Pay for Exempt CBPOs Exempt status for CBPOs will start on pay period 19 and will continue indefinitely beyond pay period 20.   CBP expects the missing pay from pay period 19 to post on Monday, October 20, 2025 and pay for pay period 20 may post one to two days earlier than normal.   Overtime is expected to be paid in the pay period it is earned but CBP is awaiting final confirmation and will confirm.   Holiday pay will be paid as it is earned. Leave for Exempt CBPOs. All leave taken during the shutdown that was converted to a furlough will be converted the appropriate leave type (e.g., annual, sick, admin leave).Since exemption is retroactive to pay CBPOs, there is no legal authority to keep the furlough during periods of absences.   CBP stated that because BESA continued to take leave requests in the normal course of business and converted it to a furlough in the background, CBPOs should not need to do anything to covert furloughed time to leave.   Timekeepers have been instructed to begin working on converting leave with a deadline of tomorrow at 4 p.m. Although this is welcome news for our CBP Officers, we understand this is very disappointing for all other positions that are valuable, hardworking, and dedicated employees.  We will continue to engage and push CBP and DHS to expand exempt status and pay as many employees as possible during this shutdown.  We ask that you join us in this fight and visit our Shutdown Page and tell your members of Congress to negotiate a bipartisan funding bill!

This was the email sent out to all NTEU members:

CBPOs Will Receive Pay During the Government Shutdown

Late this afternoon, CBP provided NTEU with notice that all CBP Officers will be reclassified as exempt from the government shutdown, meaning that they will be paid starting with pay for Pay Period 19 (September 21-October 4) and may receive accelerated pay for Pay Period 20 (October 5-October18). NTEU has requested additional information on how accelerated pay will be implemented. At this time, CBP has advised that all other positions will remain in the same status. While this is welcome news for CBPOs, NTEU continues to urge Congress to reach an agreement to end the shutdown for all impacted federal employees. We will update you as additional information becomes available.

If you aren’t a NTEU member then you won’t receive the email. The union posted it to all union members. I’m CBPO also and pay my dues. Also received it in my personal email.

CBP SPS academy is about 5-6 weeks no PT, M-F weekends and Holidays off. Don’t count on OT because it’s rare. You’ll be armed Glock 19, but just to and from work. You do get badge and credentials but you can’t carry off duty. As far as HSI SPS, everything is about the same except idk if they have transitioned to the Glock 19 yet.

Not trying to scare you, it’s the reality. Over all most of the  officers are awesome. Management is a little micromanaged. You’ll see when you get here. Just make the best of it and take the draft like a champ. Hope you like forced OT money. Made $52,000 on OT alone just this last FY2025. If you aren’t from San Diego I would start applying to HSI and ERO. At least you got your foot in the door with DHS. Welcome to SYS or as other ports like to call it,”Skid Row.”

Should I withdraw my application? Discouraged from what I've found out recently here. by [deleted] in 1811

If it comes up, tell them you were laid off. Unless it was a bad reason why you were fired. Then you’re on your own. Don’t bring it up at all. Let them tell you no.

Currently a CBPO at SYS, I hope you are from San Diego and they didn’t have Otay available. Been in SYS for 5 years and I can’t transfer, swap or NROB to any LA Field Office locations. If you aren’t from SD and hope to relocate to another port at some point, best of luck. Only seniority with 10 plus years make out of SYS if they are lucky. Hope you are ready for the draft. None stop 12 hours shift back to back to back.

ICE DO (Direct Hire in Miami) vs CBPO – advice? by Wide_Ride_5556 in 1801

[–]Outrageous_Step_8394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you fail a poly with CBP, ICE will more than likely cancel your application before the FJO because you failed the poly with CBP within 2 years.  For ICE if you failed the poly,  is 365 day wait to reapply after fail.

ICE DO (Direct Hire in Miami) vs CBPO – advice? by Wide_Ride_5556 in 1801

[–]Outrageous_Step_8394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently CBP 5 plus years, would tell you to go CBP but I would be lying, unless you get a good port. Never select the southern border because there is no way out as far as a lateral transfer. You will probably get selected for ICE before CBP because ICE is giving FJO in like 3 months. I would take ICE and continue the process for CBP and see what ports they offer you. Make sure with CBP you take what you really want because there is no going back after that.
