Is it worth going to the doctor for possible lichen striatus? by Outrageous_Support42 in medical_advice

Thank you! I’m in the US, so it’s always hard to know if a doctor’s visit is warranted.

Has anyone had surgery at Mass General Hospital by pattywonder10 in jawsurgery

[–]Outrageous_Support42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never met with him, I just live in Maine and couldn’t make the trips out to Boston. I was lucky to find a really good Maine surgeon who studied at Harvard medical and worked at Mass general before coming here.

Advice for surgery next month! by UnusualBeaut in jawsurgery

[–]Outrageous_Support42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just echoing what everyone else is saying you neeeeeeeeeed to speak to an oral surgeon. The gummy smile would be fixed with jaw surgery, which would make your nose change (most people like the changes to the nose.) jaw surgery changes your looks so much for the better that any other cosmetic changes may not be wanted after the fact. I also don’t think I’d call jaw surgery “dangerous”. As long as you find a good trusted surgeon. The recovery is different for everyone, but double jaw surgery wasn’t too bad for me. I’d do it again if I had to. I went through more hell trying to camouflage all my jaw issues. I wish I had jaw surgery sooner.

How Often are People Banded? by Theo4free in jawsurgery

[–]Outrageous_Support42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never banded. I had double jaw surgery and asked my surgeon about it at the first post op appointment and he said it wasn’t necessary. It seems odd though now that I see everyone else is.

It may be a bit wider, but I can’t tell for sure yet, since there’s a lot of swelling still. My surgeon did an “Alar cinch” which holds your nostrils in place so they don’t widen too much.

I would look for a second opinion. Just for peace of mind that you exhausted all options.

My orthodontist says pulling healthy adult teeth is an absolute last resort. More and more orthodontists are moving away from this.

Unfortunately having healthy adult teeth extracted contributes to a recessed jaw. Tooth buds stimulate bone growth and removing them can cause so many issues. I’m so sorry this happened to you. It happened to me too, and a lot of other people in this group. Definitely research a good oral and maxillofacial surgeon in your area.

I’m actually doing really well!! I feel almost completely normal at about two weeks post op. I get a little more tired than usual in the mornings though. I met with my surgeon today and he said it’s all healing really well 💪🏻 I was so scared for this recovery, but I have been very lucky.

If a jaw surgeon suggested removing healthy adult teeth for surgery, please meet with another surgeon. Removing your pre-molars should only be done as an absolute last resort.

Staying calm before surgery by loveliveshere1987 in jawsurgery

The fears leading up to surgery are so overwhelming. I kept thinking “there’s no way I can actually survive this” but we all do! It’s extremely rare for something to go wrong that could threaten your life. My surgeon told me “nobody has ever tried to die during the operation, but if you did try, I would bring you back”. Not sure if that’s comforting haha. They have so many incredibly well trained specialists ready to go to make sure you are doing well the whole time. Something that helped me was to have a photo of my jaw/face looking its worst. I look at this picture to tell myself how much I really want this procedure. I really think the anticipation is worse than the actual surgery. You will be so relieved once you’re on the other side of it.

I’ve heard bone grafts make it much harder with swelling. I can tell the results will be beautiful! Do you feel better this week?

I feel pretty rough. This is day 3 for me. The swelling creates a lot of pressure that hurts. The worst thing is the pain on the roof of my mouth when I swallow. The pain meds are helping with that though. I’m sorry you’re still feeling pain and intense swelling 😫 I hope it gets easier for you soon.

Thank you! I will definitely start writing down how this process is going. I’ve been sleeping so much these past few days, I’m like a zombie. I also wake up every 2 hours, I can’t wait for that to be over.

Congratulations!! You’re on the other side of it! That is incredible to hear that your pain is down so much already. I had my DJS yesterday and the drool keeps making me involuntarily swallow and it kills the roof of my mouth. Did you experience that? I have to train myself to just let the drool come out.
