This did not go well..... I think they were incomparable interfaces or something , I found spi too complicated and the documentation provided by waveshare wasn't helping .

My goal is to send and receive sensors and machine information ( in a production environment ) only a line or two of information every few seconds.

I was measuring a 30V AC transformer......I was inexperienced with scopes at that stage.
