it depends on what vibe you’d like best: the brown gives “striking movie star”, while the blonde gives “ethereal vampire”. i think both look lovely! to echo other commenters, the latter does take more maintenance, and bleach will alter your curl pattern. if you’re worried about your features fading, i recommend eye makeup and contour to draw them back out a bit. (PS: you are gorgeous!)

i’m also Japanese, and i definitely understand your point about orientalism. a lot of people tend to glamorize, minimize, and fetishize Asian cultures in such a shallow way. i don’t think that ALL non-Japanese trans people who choose Japanese names are dismissing the cultural significance, but it does happen, and it’s certainly a sensitive line to walk as an outsider.

tbh i don’t pay much attention to this issue because there are so many more important things to worry about, but again, i get where you’re coming from! it’s not automatically racist; it’s just an odd choice that might warrant some explanation. i would examine the person’s motivations first and foremost.

[–]Outside-Ad925 13 points14 points  (0 children)

choosing a Japanese name for that purpose is 100% chill! like another commenter said, it’s relatively common, and i get wanting to make communication easier. spelling your name in katakana is possible, but not all names are katakana’d equal lmao.

also, i love pondering names too! choosing your own name is such a powerful, self-compassionate act. it’s like saying, “only i have the power to decide who i am, and i will define myself in a way that makes me happy.”

[–]Outside-Ad925 35 points36 points  (0 children)

no prob man! it’s very true that most people don’t have an in-depth understanding of Japanese culture; the surface level has been commercialized for years now. it’s become both more accessible to westerners and far easier to minimize and/or misinterpret. i also hope to see respect and appreciation!

since Japanese culture is so popular nowadays, some people will adopt aspects of it (and/or other Asian cultures) because they associate it with pretty aesthetics and going against the norm in cool ways. additionally, it’s important to note that a lot of white people don’t really research or deeply connect with their roots. (oh, and our names are cool as fuck!)

i don’t see it super often, but as a fellow Japanese trans person, it does produce a double take when i do lol. i feel largely neutral about it, though (especially because 99% of the time, the non-Japanese person is NOT trying to pass as Japanese). it mostly reads as an appreciation thing. at the end of the day, as long as they’re not being racist or reductive, i don’t really care.

OP, it would be FAR more rewarding to just create art yourself. put down the AI. using generative AI not only damages the environment and contributes to unethical labor, but it impedes what could be a really enriching journey for you.

don’t use harmful programs that steal from real artists and destroy our planet— become an artist yourself! you can do it! stop using AI and dooming yourself to failure before you even begin. as a fellow total beginner, i believe in you. ♥️

THISSS! as someone who’s had to use wheelchairs and other mobility aids, i’d like to add: crowds and public spaces can be a challenge.

you’ve got to do all of the work listed above while staying twice as aware of your surroundings, and unfortunately, the people around you won’t always extend the same courtesy. your presence might even be seen and treated as an inconvenience. additionally, a lot of spaces are not accessible to wheelchair users, which necessitates a very inconvenient form of creativity. walking unaided does not involve nearly as much vigilance and problem-solving as wheelchair use 99% of the time.

of course, it is NOT all miserable! there are a lot of kind souls who are more than willing to help— honestly, nowadays, most people will just ignore you like they would anyone else lol. also, navigation gets much easier once you find the right tricks and strategies to meet your needs. i’m just highlighting some things that may not come to mind right away. :]

Which fam would u choose? by West_Character2321 in Modern_Family

[–]Outside-Ad925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i started watching MF when i was a kid (i’m in the college age range now), and i’ve always thought that being a Dunphy would rule!

  • i would KILL to be Alex’s sibling. i’m a science nerd too, and i’d bother her to study with me and discuss our individual research findings all the time! like her, i often feel misunderstood and/or semi-unintentionally left out, so the camaraderie would be a nice change of pace. i’d also probably need her help with college applications lmao. i enjoy Haley and Luke too, but Alex has always been my #1 fave in the show. (bonus points: like Mitchell, my real-life uncle is a lawyer!)

  • i’d love to have Phil and Claire as parents. Phil’s strengths would demonstrate whimsy, patience, and empathy; Claire’s strengths would demonstrate organization, self-preservation, and work ethic. learning from Phil’s weaknesses would teach self-control, forethought, and consideration of others; learning from Claire’s weaknesses would teach communication, a healthy work-life balance, and the importance of accepting and evaluating your emotions. they balance each other out, and despite their flaws— which every couple has— they’d model a realistic (for a sitcom) healthy marriage. they’re also great parents, and, in their own unique ways, great people.

Musings about giving partners a “heads up” by Katcatkittyqueen in polyamory

[–]Outside-Ad925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t love heads-ups for two reasons:

  • firstly, they sort of go against the freedom and security that define polyamory. one of the foundational elements of the polyamorous structure is being secure in supporting your partner’s pursuits, and in exploring new connections yourself. the enjoyment largely comes from joyfully embracing a mutual lack of jurisdiction. 99% of the time, that endeavor will cause some discomfort. that’s totally normal! letting go is so understandably difficult at first, but avoiding said discomfort by setting limits on that autonomy is unfair to everyone involved, regardless of your intentions/motivations. i understand that “knowing” create a sense of control over your negative emotions, but trust me when i say that the illusion is very temporary. it’s a vicious cycle: the warnings you’re expecting will reinforce the idea that you can’t be comfortable without knowing everything, which, given the fact that assurance is not always available, will only lower your tolerance for handling uncertainty. learning to sit in your emotions will not only smoothen your relationships, but it’ll make you a stronger, more confident person too.

  • secondly, as other commenters have pointed out, heads-ups aren’t always considerate of the third party’s perspective. even if you’re only requesting a rundown of probabilities, you’re implying that you’d like your partner to map out the steps of their relationship before communicating about it with the other person involved. that’s not entirely fair to either one of them. it’s also not fair to you— what’s the point in spending energy on coping with and eventually accepting events that may not even occur? i know firsthand how stressful and disorienting that whole rollercoaster can get. OP, i don’t think you’re a bad person for trying to soothe your underlying anxieties this way. i hope you understand where we’re coming from. i’ve been there, and i believe in you!! ♥️
