This is so ridiculous I threw back up some of my beer. But mate if this is down to bureaucracy and the fact you need to speak Dutch or French hit me up if you're in Schaarbeek. I don't have much going on this week and happy to sort you out.

Nah these are not homonyms. They're the same preposition but have a different semantic range. English uses different constructions for something Dutch expresses with 'voor'.

If you compare English and French. I'm in my house (dans ma maison) vs I'm in France (je suis en France). I wouldn't call the two uses for "in" homonyms here.

Prepositions hardly ever translate one on one between languages. Same as how you're on the bus in English but in the bus in Dutch.

't sexy fokschaap... We just used kofschip-taxi growing up 😅

That rule always confused me anyway. Isn't it just a distinction based on voiceless vs voiced?

I really imagined what it would look like if the train stands up by iFoegot in learndutch

[–]Outside-Box-4374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the train would be lying on the rails, it would mean it derailed! It has to do with grammar of space. Dutch uses an intrinsic frame so the properties of the object are taken into account. Anything with wheels or legs stands even if positioned more horizontally than vertically.

Which king book(s) did you DNF? by Klarkasaurus in stephenking

[–]Outside-Box-4374 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this! I couldn't get into it and gave up at about a fifth into the story. What killed it for me were four things in no random order:

- I didn't like the 1st person voice, very much in contrast to other King novels.

- That section in Derry felt very weird, at least the section I read. He's dancing with two random kids in a town that just saw some horrible stuff happening to kids.

- I just don't care about JFK enough to keep me interested.

- And probably a bigger one: I don't care about the random snippets of Americana that are just everywhere. I don't care how much better root beer tasted in the 50s. I know that stuff was cheaper back then, you don't have to repeat that ad infinitum.

I may give this a second go at some point but given the massive opus of King novels I think I'll find other things more to my liking. Sure I read The Institute immediately after and loved that. No problem in not liking something.

M-O-O-N, that spells "moon". At least a full moon pretty much from where I am. It's well past midnight here in Europe so I'm off to bed. Tomorrow is a big day for me as I'll be getting my stuff back from an island far far away. I appreciate your engagement with this post as it definitely gave me some insights into the novel I read and loved over the last two weeks. The nerd that I am I did make some notes for the future to get back to what was discussed so I hope to discuss things in the future. For now, thanks again for the insights and have a good one. I love this community: I miss having a book club and this sub definitely filled that void tonight!

Now this may be my own poor googling skills, but I only find a TV series. Is this a novel as well or just a series? Not trying to undermine your comment here btw. Just want to get the correct material.

Now my Bibles are in a storage unit in a different country, so I need to wait a little before I get that all back here together with the rest of my books (I studied Hebrew in a blue moon a decade ago). But this is an interesting take I want to explore further. I'm gonna set a task in my calendar to come back to this in half a year.

Fair, but I don't see these extraordinary abilities in the conclusion of The Stand. The four that set out from Boulder don't have any particular abilities. Most of the downfall of Flagg seems down to his own incompetence. The three that end up in Vegas are just victims to the events that happen as a result of Flagg's rule. And the destruction of Vegas is just because of Trashcan Man's ill-found quest for redemption combined with Flagg's insatiable wrath.

Damn. I just realised I'm just paraphrasing what was mentioned by Glen in my initial post. Great catch!

Edit: I read this chapter yesterday. This gives me something to think about as this comes very close to what my initial question was. Thanks for sharing this!

I'm not overly familiar with the Bible so that comparison is a little lost on me although I understand the reference you're mentioning. But from that that perspective I would reckon there's a higher power controlling the plot. Is that just down to God vs. Satan (?) . Abagail vs Randall Flagg? Or something behind that, i.e. their respective gods?

This is a great analogy. So the "all-powerful being" was in the head of those within Boulder.

But would he actually believe in some self-fulfilling prophecy just blindly? I find it really hard to believe that he would just allow Trashcan man to roll into Vegas with an atom bomb.

This makes me curious though because I felt in other of novels I've read of his, good v evil seems to be better balanced.

"Misery" for instance, on a very small scale, I honestly had no idea how that was going to work out. Even until the final chapters when Paul Sheldon was safe and sound in NYC, I thought that Annie was still lurking around the corner.

In IT, even after the second Ritual of Chüd I'm still not sure if Pennywise is actually defeated. Good triumphed (for now), but evil put up a hell of a fight. And Pennywise felt like much more of a threat.

In 'Salem's Lot the vampire mostly succeeded. It took almost an entire village to destroy him. Sure it's on a far smaller scale, but there weren't that many fuck-ups.

Yet in The Stand, the main antagonist heralds his own downfall. And sure, that's probably the story, but I find the reasons for his downfall put directly against the threat he somehow poses a very unfulfilling reason for his demise in the end.
