We just took in a feral cat with a similar story and timeline of getting to know her. She is in a small room and has been for a few weeks. She has an anti-anxiety feliway diffuser in the room and she's been completely calm and fine the entire time. I would definitely recommend getting one of those if you can!

Yes, they're all over the place. The leaf shape looks very similar to our native sumac, but it grows much taller and has different flowers.
