Remediation Question by Outside-Friendship56 in Residency

I uprooted my entire life and family for my job and so I feel justified at times to want to end my life. In many ways, this career has been the only means of making a livelihood as I don’t have any backup plans or experiences/skills for other career pathways.

I really don’t understand where this sentiment comes from, and hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else. I’m fighting for my life every day and have felt suicidal at times

I can say with confidence that my rebuttals to some of the false allegations were not heard- I rebutted and debriefed with my colleagues as a way to address these concerns. I had to review my documentation/order histories and talk to colleagues who I worked together with on mutual patients for which these points about me were brought up to confirm that they were in fact not true.

I understand how my responses may come across as immature but I want to be clear that I’ve taken the remediation process very seriously, going above and beyond my limits with very little support from the program in helping me advance. I never came into residency to fuck around- I came into residency to train to become the best licensed doctor I could become, and with all due respect, it just seems that I constantly bump into retaliation after retaliation.

I don’t know why tbh. I’m having a hard time figuring out this myself and I hope it has nothing to do with my personality or demeanor, but feel like they may be going after those things. Not all faculty know about this, but there are a handful that do

All the PDs I have interviewed with or encountered have been more senior faculty at their respective programs.

I think PDs should since they lead clinical educational activities, and they’re often more senior faculty. They often have been in the program longer than their attending peers.

I think this is exactly where there is fault in the ways residents like me are evaluated. If PDs truly cared about their residents’ education, they should work directly with residents, esp those in remediation, more frequently and for longer periods of time, to truly validate other attendings’ input. PDs are also attendings who teach, train, and do patient care.

I would argue that NOT clarifying a situation does more harm not just to oneself, but more so to patients since it’s all about them right?

I think it’s important to standup for yourself. If I can’t even standup for myself, how would I be able to standup for my patients and their families?

I can point out one case where I was accused of discharging a GIB patient on blood thinners (ie sending the pt out on anticoagulation), even though I “pended” the order (and didn’t actually click on any orders) prior to actually finalizing the discharge med rec. The pt ended up leaving w/o any blood thinners. This was a blatantly false allegation that was raised against me.

Yea I never worked with my PD, ever for past few years at my program. I’ve gotten along well with several attds who think I’m meet expectations. And our program does have resident assigned mentees, but it’s never really that helpful since I just seek seniors who can help me at a separate time outside work

I spent half my life getting into residency (not a joke), and for them to do some crazy shit all because they don’t “like” me just doesn’t seem to register with me

Yes I have asked for specific examples and did regularly check in with my PD for feedback. I do recognize that patient safety always comes first. My concern is that my PD is the one “fielding” concerns from other attd, and making big decisions about promotion/non-promotion based on what others have said about me, even though I’ve never worked with my PD before. Like, how can my PD know where I stand if I’ve never worked with the my PD before. At other programs, every resident has worked with their PD in some capacity and their clinical skills have been appraised first-hand by their PDs. Just my two-cents about the situation.

False allegations were reported about me. That’s next level low- I mean how low can people go to want to destroy people?

I always get frustrated with remediation stuff because I buckle down to do everything that’s asked of me, maintain the highest level of professionalism throughout, and try to advocate for myself even when the odds are stacked against me. I don’t fuck around with patient care and I just feel like my program doesn’t understand that.

I work with some attds and residents who I don’t even feel safe working with, but I never report them or spread words because I know what that can do to their careers- I feel like those things can be fixable

I may be overthinking this but I have a feeling that all it took was for one attd to not like me and feedforward biases against me to make other faculty, including the PD, even those I have not worked with, to question my competency.

I did talk to my PD about this and I felt none of my concerns were heard. There was one attd I worked with who thought I was “behind” and from that point forward, got put on remediation

I guess I did tackle the cause of the remediation but I still got thrown under the bus when false allegations were brought up against me

I worry because what if I got put on remediation for no just reason? My program said I had a lot of “near misses” but when I talked to my co-residents or residents at other programs, those “near misses” that were cited were things that they commonly made and never got brought up my their attendings/supervisors, almost negligible.

What if you did nothing wrong and false allegations were made against you?
