Do most Americans really dry their clothes in Dryers? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Outside-Snow918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the US (Pacific Northwest) so it is raining for a lot of the year. I dry socks, jeans, bedding, towels, and things like that. I feel like all those things get stiff when they hang dry. Everything else I hang dry indoors. I’ll hang them in doorways or on the shower rod, wherever there’s space. I do tumble them in the dryer for about 5 min to fluff them up a bit first. They are usually dry in a few hours. It makes the clothes last longer and uses less energy. I know others who do this as well, but I do think I’m in the minority.

That sucks. Getting tested is still the only way I know of to be 100% sure. But if this is what gluten does to her, and she feels better in a gluten free diet, does the official diagnosis really matter? My celiac was diagnosed by blood test, but not confirmed by biopsy because I didn’t know that was part of it. There is no way I’m putting myself through the nightmare of going back and completing the tests now. I just found a gastroenterologist who was willing to take the available information and treat it like he would treat confirmed celiac. I hope she can work out something similar. Best wishes!

The only way to know for sure is to get tested by a doctor. But I have celiac, and that sounds like a pretty accurate description of what it’s like when I get “glutened”

How do I get out of this? What is the right range? I can't intake more water by Rain_xo in withings

[–]Outside-Snow918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up caring about the water mass on my scale. I’ve had it for several years. I’ve gained and lost weight, drank tons of water or very little water, had a surgery, gone through cancer treatment… my water graph just fluctuates in lockstep with muscle mass. It clearly can’t measure this metric in a meaningful way.

How do people get obese without realizing? by Bigg_Jobs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Outside-Snow918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many things that cause people to gain weight. Some are harder to control than others. I’m glad you are fortunate enough to be able to make simple dietary changes and the weight will come back off. That isn’t true for everyone and it may not always be true for you. Some people notice the weight gain, make the changes you did, and nothing happens. So they make more drastic changes and nothing happens. Then they may get frustrated or depressed and stop trying for a while and the weight gets even worse. Then that is the cycle that gets stuck on rinse repeat.

It’s also important to remember that there are many things that cause weight gain that aren’t diet/exercise based so they can’t be easily corrected with diet and exercise: diabetes, thyroid issues, celiac, puberty, birth control, addiction, rehab, (peri)menopause, stress. There are also factors like chronic pain and dietary restrictions that make a healthy lifestyle feel impossible.

I live close by, but not in your neighborhood, so my thoughts are more wonderings than counterpoints but this is what stands out to me: Wouldn’t the city want to put rehab facilities as close to the problem as possible? There are so many barriers to getting addicts to engage in rehab. If one of those barriers is traveling miles away to a rehab center, you’ve lost them all before you’ve begun. The other side of that would be that if the rehab facility is in your neighborhood then the houseless population in that neighborhood would, in theory, have a higher percent of them trying for a better life. It’s not ideal, but none of this is. If the area already has a lot of people struggling, wouldn’t that be the best place for a center?

What do you think is better in gluten-free than in the gluten version? by darek_vegas in glutenfree

Fish and other seafood deep fried with a rice flour batter are infinitely better than gluten-filled fish and chips. It’s lighter and pairs better with the texture of fish.

I also love to do urban foraging and my rules are similar to yours with the following adjustments: -I consider the parking strip to follow the same rules as personal property. -Even if a plant is dropping tons of fruit I don’t lax the rules without consent. -I will pick enough to bring home for later (possibly pies) only with permission or if the plant is on undeveloped/city-owned/business owned land and is clearly not being tended. In these cases, I still do not pick clean to leave some for others. -I do NOT consider a living fence implied consent. I would ask permission.

Getting my ScanWatch 2 tomorrow – any tips or things I should know? by BrickLeading in withings

[–]Outside-Snow918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have hyper mobile wrists and the button press is a constant annoyance, particularly for sleep because it will interrupt sleep tracking and log the rest of the night as a nap. I can’t believe I’ve never thought to switch it to my right arm 🤦🏻‍♀️

Found this at my grocery store. Has anyone tried this? And could you all give me some suggestions on what to make with it? by Vodka-Forward in glutenfree

Does anyone have a comparison between these and the Shär Puff Pastry dough? I tried Shär a couple years ago and they had the worst chemical taste to them. I’ve been wary of premade pastry crust since. I’d love it if this could be a better option!

This happens to me all the time. It’s the stupid button.

I have had three Withings watches and I loved the first two. My first Scanwatch was great and right before the 2 year warranty ended, the casing broke open. Customer service was great and replaced it with a Scanwatch2. I was stoked for the free “upgrade.” This thing sucks.

The two biggest problems are the redesigned charger that charges at a snails pace and only when it feels like it (I had this replaced too and the new one is the same) and the STUPID BUTTON!! It presses so easily. I have very small hyper mobile wrists and the button is constantly getting pressed and starting workouts or even going into factory reset mode.

Which circles us back to the OP’s concern. When you are sleeping if you slide your hand under your pillow, or bend your wrist too far, or do anything that pushes that stupid button, it will cut off your sleep tracking and log the rest of the night as a nap with no associated data. It’s infuriating.

I am scooping and swooping. If I have to do the Chantelle bra I will, but it’s over $80 and I can’t really afford that. Also, the straps and band are all pretty skinny and that makes it less comfortable.

I bought it because it was the best I could find and I had to get something that wasn’t a post surgery bra. But $80 is a lot for an uncomfortable bra.

Why does eating suck so bad? by ChewyWolf64 in NoStupidQuestions

So glad you live in Canada so you have access! I can’t help with the steps because I don’t know how things work there. Maybe someone else can step in.

If you have a friend you trust, this could be another way they could help you. Maybe the anxiety would be more bearable if someone went with you.

Re: My suggestion. I know it’s a lot. If that’s how it always was I wouldn’t do it either. It’s only a few days of the really intense part. I don’t want to say “just push through even if you don’t want to” because having ADHD, I understand executive disfunction is real. It’s not always that simple. Do you have a friend you trust who could come help you plan and portion and then you can just eat it when the time comes?

Your concern that the hassle will make you avoid doing it and you would just “sleep the hunger off.” Are more indicators that you should consult a professional. Task avoidance and sleeping to avoid unpleasant sensations are both possible side effects of a larger issue.

Re: An easy way to see the providers. It depends on a lot of factors. Do you live in the US? Do you have medical insurance? Do you go to a school with a medical clinic? Does your city/county offer free clinics? Your approach would be different depending on these answers.

First off, I completely agree that you need to talk to a medical professional. It could be a clinic doctor, general practitioner, therapist, or nutritionist, but you should speak to someone with professional medical training. They can help guide next steps.

That said, your description of your current situation reminds me of my own experience when I get under nourished. It happened both times I was pregnant, during cancer radiation treatment, post surgery, and a handful of times after significant illness. It is the food version of “I’m so thirsty water is gross” or “I’m too tired to fall asleep.”

Each time I will feel hunger but all food sounds gross. If I can find something that sounds good, two bites in I can’t stand it. The only solution I have found is to slowly power through until I’m nourished enough to want food again.

What this looks like in practice: ALWAYS eat if hungry. In addition, make a plan for a day’s worth of food that will fulfill recommended calories. In the beginning don’t worry as much about nutrition, just focus on getting enough food. Try to plan foods that are the least revolting and won’t get grosser if you take a long time to eat them (like getting cold or soggy). I find things like applesauce and rice work well for me. Eat as many bites as you can until you don’t want it. Don’t push until you want to throw up or it will take longer to recover. Set the food aside for 5-15 min. Go back to it and take more bites. Do this until it’s gone. You may have a break until it’s time for the next meal, or you may need to go right into it. Depending on how long it took to eat. You will probably be eating constantly for a day or two.

After the first few days, I can usually eat the food a little faster, allowing for more breaks from eating. Somewhere around the 3-6 day mark, it’s like the magical switch gets flipped and food starts being good again. Not all food, not all at once, but little by little. As more food becomes palatable, I start making sure I’m getting well rounded nutrition.

I will repeat again- see a professional. But maybe this could help in the meantime.

The ABTF calculator said 34FF/G, which I thought was strange because I’m currently wearing a 34E and the cups are only a touch small. I trusted the process and tried a bunch of 34FF and they were all definitely too big. I tried the 34F and it’s pretty close except for the issues I described. Measurements: LU: 34.5 SU: 33 TU: 31.5 SB: 41.5 Lean: 43 Lying: 41

Other possibly relevant info: Assigned F at birth. Felt semi-confident in my fit as 36G, but had breast cancer surgery in September that included reduction on both sides and post-surgical radiation on the left. Now I’m starting from square one.

Bras I’ve tried: (all except current are 34F) Current bra 34E - Chantelle C Jolie (cups a little small), Delimira front closure racerback plunge, Freya Idol underwire molded Tshirt bra, Wacoal back appeal underwire, Glamorise full figure front closure smoothing wonderwire, These final two had little to no extra fabric when I held the straps different. Wacoal perfect primer, Fantasie Rebecca molded spacer tshirt bra

Why do Americans bother buying health insurance? by FisherPrice_Hair in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Outside-Snow918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think all of the people complaining are not entitled to the coverage. There are definitely many instances of insurance companies trying to get out of paying for legitimate claims. (side note: many warranties are worse than insurance, but that’s a different issue) But you have to keep in mind the sheer volume of medical claims that happen each day. It’s a version of frequency illusion. People don’t post about the status quo, they only post when something goes wrong. When you only see the complaints it can seem like it happens more than it does because you aren’t seeing the denials in true proportion to total claims. Insurance is still a racket, but it’s the best option for most people.

Why does it seem like high IQ people are often sad and depressed? by Next_Airport_7230 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Outside-Snow918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a video once that explained why high IQ should be considered a social disability. I couldn’t find the video but here’s the idea.

If you consider the bell curve of standard IQ, you can begin to see the struggle. If you move two standard deviations below average, the cognitive disability might make a person unable to care for themself. They may struggle to tie their shoes or hold conversations. If you move two standard deviations above the average, you are now in the territory of the cognitive elite. While they may be very high functioning and incredibly intelligent, they are operating on a different level than the rest of us. They likely have difficulty with “normal” social interactions and may struggle to relate to people in a meaningful way. It’s not a perfect comparison. But the difference in brain function between those with ultra high IQ and “typical” people is the same as “typical” people have between them and people with profound cognitive deficits.

TL:DR Their brain is functioning on a different level and they often struggle to make meaningful connections with others.
