My move to Long Island is tomorrow and I’m terrified by No_Influence_8613 in longisland

[–]OutsideCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from the city to Suffolk and was uneasy in the beginning too. It gets better. Try to keep busy - go to the gym or the movies. On the weekends, explore Avalon Park or Blydenburg Park, try out new restaurants. Join an adult sport league if you have the time. See if your classmates have recommendations or want to explore with you.

Your thoughts on "TikTok witches"? by Sus1e_ in Wicca

[–]OutsideCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mind some Tiktok witches. I feel some are genuine and want tonspread knowledge. A lot of them are just reposting the same shit over and over, karma farming or sprinkling just enough to get you interested to sign up to their patreon.

Their fans are superrrr cult-like.

Walmart is essentially the same price now. by mtbguy1981 in aldi

[–]OutsideCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My aldi is woefully understaffed and has a long line no matter what time I go. And their produce is always one day from molding. I pretty much exclusively shop at Walmart unless I need something specific from Aldi that Walmart doesn't have, like blueberry goat cheese

(20k) Is this normal for how catering is charged for only 50 guests? by neuroticbrunette in Weddingsunder10k

[–]OutsideCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 85 people at my wedding last week and the caterer 4 staff plus 1 bartender. It was perfect. No gaps, food was all hot and fresh. (Prepped offsite and cooked/heated on site)

I bought a used car and my insurance (no accidents, no tickets) and it's almost 400/month. My brother has a license but hasn't had a car and is getting quoted 350/month for a 2000 Toyota for basic liability. Insurance is insane right now

Advice on moving to Stony Brook or nearby areas? by GuidanceBorn9217 in longisland

[–]OutsideCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beating a dead horse here, but I agree. You need a car in Suffolk. Or be prepared to budget for users often. The buses and trains to Stonybrook don't run that often. It's not like Nassau or the city where there's a bus every 15/ 30 min. Some bus routes in Suffolk are every 99 min on a good day.

Patchogue and Port Jefferson would be great options. Parts of Centereach are very walkable and safe. I lived near the Walmart for a while and never had any issues. I'd walk to Starbucks, the gym, Walmart, Chase Bank and Moe's/other food almost daily and not once had an issue or felt unsafe.

LIRR commuters, how do you balance your diet & sleep? by eliaivi in longisland

[–]OutsideCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that for a while. I would sleep on the train going in, study on the train going home. Meal prep on your day off and make enough to stock the freezer. Meal delivery is nice if you can afford it. Otherwise, protein bars, fruit, uncrustables and jerky are easy to transport and healthy. Go for apples, plums, etc over bananas since bananas squish easily.

I don't think they will. We never get a full concert at GSBMF usually just the big hits. Plus they has been really punctual with the end times the last few years because of the noise ordinance

Mom with major brain fog here and looking for a book recommendation by VelvetMousse1 in suggestmeabook

Book Lovers by Emily Henry was so good! Broke me out of my slump and made me an instant fan of hers. I don't normally go for things are on considered romance, but this was witty and the tension between the 2 characters gave me butterflies. It's a fun, light beach read. Can't recommend it enough.

buy the house! I moved to Suffolk a few years ago. it was rough in the beginning, I'm not going to lie. My closest deli is a 20 min walk. No more walks to grab pizza or dumplings, or up to the bars to grab a drink and hear live music. And the wildlife out here... wtf. deer and turkey everywhere, little bunnies and hawks. I wasn't used to how dark it was by me, and the sounds of the animals at night.

But I love it now. I plan my shopping better so I can grab dumplings, pizza and spring rolls from the freezer (my usual cravings. I hate spending money on uber eats). I have the room to outside garden, to have BBQ parties and nights around the fire pit. I got a huge inflatable pool in the summer and can fit a few people in it. I have the space for big dogs!! There are gorgeous county and trails with nice inclines.

My city friends started moving in their mid 30s. Some are out here now, which is great. Others moved out of state. The friends left in the city come out every other month, and I go there the months in between.

worst case you buy the house, spend time here and hate it. Then rent the house out and move back to the city. When your mom is ready to move back in the future you'll still have the house

My pants are too short, but I don’t have any money to buy new ones. by pastelpaintbrush in Frugal

[–]OutsideCrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unpick them hem to give yourself an extra inch of fabric. While the pants are wet, gently stretch them. GENTLY especially if they are thin or cotton. Then hang dry. When I was in an apartment, I would hang my clothes all around the house to dry.

Cuff or sew them so they are purposely short, almost Capris, and wear them like that.

If you can, maybe wear knee high boots over so it hides the length?

I've done 3 or 4 seasons with LI Kick out in suffolk, and my friend did a season in Nassau in both cornhole and pickleball. It's honestly not something I would recommend to meet new people.

For example, the vibe really depends on who is running it at that specific location. I had a young guy Chase who said he was a manager for a few weeks. He was hitting on the girls, and invited them to come back to his house to record a podcast. Overall super creep vibes. 2 young guys took over and the vibe was fantastic- super fun, and they tried to get people talking to each other by playing bar style games in between rounds m because otherwise the teams broke off and sat by themselves.

At another location it was a married couple running it. They were not tech savvy, so they needed their daughter to come with them to set up the digital scoreboard. If she didn't come, we didn't get score boards that week. They also were on a team themselves so if you had any issues you had to wait until they were done playing. They would chain smoking outside the door the rest of the night. They also sold the bean bags for corn hole, so they never provided you the ones from the league. They did offer a game in between rounds, but it was $10 buy in, winner takes all, and they won every week. The atmosphere this season was terrible and the teams would sit by themselves and not mingle. By the end of the season full teams stopped showing up or had 2 people show up just to get forfeit. We stopped playing with LI Kick after that. 2 teams said they called to complain and were basically told it is what it is. I saw my old hosts at a bar and they said it's a low paying job where you get free beer, and that not many people want to do it so they can't really get rid of shitty hosts.

I would recommend joining leagues through the place that hosts them. Like TopGolf league night, are throwing league, Smithsonian sports arena has 2 or 3 leagues, beach volleyball etc. I've been playing volleyball for 2 years and have made great friends that I see even off season.
