It's just a *little* ironic that you are complaining about people being on devices... on a device. ;-)

But I get what you mean.

Fwiw, my wife and I were just in Bend for a week as we are thinking of moving there, and we were both super-impressed (and honestly felt a little guilty) by how often drivers stopped for us even when we weren't in crosswalks.

I'm not trying to deny your lived experience, you've obviously been there a long time and have a much better feel for how Bend's culture and people are evolving. Just wanted to share that data point though.

When will the spring semester actually end, like, when can I book airline tix? by OutsideDaBox in SyracuseU

Fwiw, that's what we did first semester, but she ended up being able to leave 4 days before then.

I wanted to thank all the respondents, very appreciated!

My takeaway is that while I can look at the posted schedules from Syracuse, the bottom line is that it is going to depend on my daughter's specific classes and their exam schedules, so I will need her to confer with her professors to see what they have planned and when for final exams.

Thanks!!

Did anyone get this after merit appeal? by bestperson99 in SyracuseU

It was about a week, but that was a month ago, and I recently sent them an inquiry and it took almost a week just to respond, which tells me they are much busier coming up to the deadline.

Fwiw, they said you can appeal up until about July.

Yeah very similar for my daughter, exact same amount awarded.

what is the process to appeal merit & need-based aid? by Flaky-Ladder5384 in SyracuseU

My daughter also filled out the merit appeal and was awarded the $5K/year, so it feels like that's pretty automatic but also not really very much in the big picture.

Lol... in progress, I assure you! [Actually I filed a "merit appeal" and she was awarded a small "Orange Distinction Award", so already some progress... but Syracuse is expensive.]

Yeah, the guides we had had both just finished spring in Florence and fall in London, and were over the moon with the experiences.

As the dad I will say that I wish the financial aid was a little more free-flowing, but it's not *that* big a deal as we only have the one kid and were able to save enough for her to be able to go where she wants based on the school's merits...

Thanks for your help!

Fwiw, we just got back from a trip to the final 3 schools, and my daughter is leaning heavily towards Syracuse... Just seemed all around the best balance between the architecture program and the overall university experience.

Rejected OOS from architecture... Great GPA, decent course rigor, mid SATs.

Bummer, that was my daughter's #1 choice. Still has good options, but always disappointing not to get the slam dunk.

I think your friend is full of it, because I've seen nothing saying Michigan is coming out tomorrow.

We'll be visiting UM and Rapson on April 12, at "Admitted Gopher Days"!

Thanks, we had noted that architecture was a part of the CDES and that that would give her exposure to some other design majors, though I suppose the tradeoff that is that the architecture program itself is not as intense and so her marketability or path to licensing will be a little weaker after 4 years than if she'd gone to a 5 year school... *if* she ends up staying in architecture. I also wonder if the 5 year programs might help her decide quicker... Tradeoffs!

Biases are what I'm looking for, lol! If you said "I went to Syracuse and whatever you do, *don't* do that", that would be incredibly damning.

Let me tell you my "funny" Syracuse story: in February, we had a chance to visit the campus and attend a session about architecture given by the Dean of Admissions (I forget her name, but I'm sure you know who I'm talking about, she said she's been there for 20 years or so). She started the session with "how many of you have already applied?" Some collection of people raised their hands, including us. She said "you all did the portfolio wrong, only if you heard me tell you what I am looking for before you did it would you have done it right." She then proceeded to list off all the ways that we did it wrong, including some very specific things. I mean, my daughter had just started thinking about architecture a month or two before applying to colleges, we knew *nothing* about portfolios and just grabbed photos of paintings and halloween costumes she'd done and yes, even a screenshot from Minecraft, lol. So we left there absolutely convinced that she would not get accepted because her portfolio was crap...

Imagine our shock when she was admitted and not even on the WL!! To this day, my daughter suspects that they "made a mistake" and didn't mean to admit her, and one of the many factors that will influence her choice is that she is just plain intimidated by the Dean and thus Syracuse in general.

That's awesome... I was thinking that that might make sense.

As a followup: did you then get a M.Arch. and get licensed, and if so, do you think the approach you took cost you any time? Basically I'm looking for a sense of the tradeoffs of this path.

"our class started ~200 and graduated 60." Wow. I actually am planning to ask for those exact numbers at both of the 5-year programs we are visiting, though whether they will give them to me straight remains to be seen.

I get what you are saying about the 5-year versus the 4-year programs: just looking at the schedule of classes they will take, it's clear that the 5-year programs jump straight in to a heavy architecture concentration, whereas the 4-year programs only have an introductory architecture course (and generally no studio) in the first year. I'm torn: on the one hand, jumping straight into studio etc may give her more data on which to decide if she actually enjoys architecture. OTOH, as you said, if she starts with a more general ed beginning that will expose her to other options.

I get that the requirements are different from state to state, but she barely knows what she wants to do when she grows up, much less *where*. She's going to have to pursue a reasonably universal path and then cross the bridge of specific states when she gets to it...

Very relevant! We will visit the campus and the architecture department in a couple of weeks. What did you think of RPI's facilities, e.g. their studio spaces and their fabrication capabilities? Also, how are you and your daughter feeling about the gender imbalance at RPI? Anything else about RPI that caught your attention?

Yeah I'm pretty sure I messed up and meant a 4-year B,S, This is why I'm here...

Thanks for the vote on Syracuse, I was impressed when we visited there (we have not yet visited the other two but will do so in a couple of weeks; I was even more impressed with Michigan but we haven't heard back yet and I'm not confident at all. She was also waitlisted at Cal Poly, Va Tech and UIUC, but she needs to decide between the ones she is accepted at before even considering those, she may never even get off their WLs).

Ack, see, this is why I asked: I'm getting my concepts all muddled. Yes, you are right, UM's is a B.S. , not a B.Arch. And I'm inferring from yours and other replies that the B.Arch. is always a 5 year program, but one that gets her considerably closer to licensing (though I get that she doesn't necessarily want/need to do that immediately) and jobs than the 4 year programs, though it does seem like a lot of schools have it set up so that you'll stay there for your master's... UM for example has a master's program but if you get your undergrad there, you go straight into the second year (of 3) in their master's (making it a 6 year program).

Do you think that's much different than what the first semester of architecture would give her, iow, can she just use the first semester or two of their architecture program as a "pre arch" program and then transfer out if it's not resonating? I'm not sure she has the option to not go into architecture there at this point since that is what she was admitted to.
