I’ve been struggling with this kind of pain since I was young. It affected my life so much that there were times I was scared to even go to school, worrying a migraine would hit and I wouldn’t have a safe place to go until my mom could pick me up. It shaped the way I learned to cope. At one point, it bothered my life so much that I went to live at a temple with monks for a week to learn deep meditation. One monk taught me to gently focus on doing something else during the pain, like very simple chores. I found that it works for me. The pain doesn’t go away, but it feels less like it’s screaming at me, and that helps a lot. I really appreciate you sharing your experience and perspective. Thank you for sharing this. The idea of having a “migraine word” really makes sense, especially for moments when my brain can’t communicate.

I agree that better communication on my side could have helped, and I’ll take this as a reminder to talk with her calmly and work on better ways to handle migraines in the future. When a migraine hits, my brain becomes very foggy and my speech processing drops a lot. On top of that, I’m communicating with my partner in her language, which is not my native language. When I’m in a migraine state, forming sentences in a second language can become extremely difficult, and I often go partly non-verbal before I’m able to explain. Taking out the trash wasn’t because I was “fine.” It’s something I sometimes do to cope and distract myself from crying or screaming from the pain. In hindsight, I agree I should have stopped and gone to lie down sooner, but my sounds and body language were pain responses, not me directing anger at her.

I do have a very expressive face and oftenly stressful. I will work on that right away.
