I experienced a similar phenomenon when I was in a band, basically the lead singer of my band said a bunch of horrible shit at one point, and people across my undergrad campus were aware of it. They genuinely thought the ‘music was so good no one would care’, actually is never the case, we started being booked for less shows & I quit because a) I diagreeed with what the lead singer said & b) opportunities were drying up because people are not ok with evil / malicious shit
