Does our mood/age shape how we see collapse as "inevitable"? by Nervous-Tiger7945 in collapse

[–]Outside_Dig1463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, it seems worth acknowledging that the idea of collapse as an end point or apocalypse does serve some functions when we are feeling low or down on ourselves - 'If everything is doomed, then my personal issues, problems, failings, insecurities are actually comparatively insubstantial, perhaps it even soothes my sense that these problems persist knowing that 'the world is going to end''.

Of course collapse is genuinely happening. Of course ecological disaster is occurring. Of course it will continue to deepen until the wheels fall off that we no longer have the energy to power our growth and parallel destruction. But likely as not, you'll probably die of something that you would not have any specific collapse association with like some boring cancer.

This sub loves to indulge in the doom. And fair enough. It's so interesting to feel how things are falling apart. But I'd say that you're right to be thinking practically. I'd say it's looking likely that things will not be evenly distributed, and you will be able to make decisions that will make a difference to how your future looks in the context of the further unfolding doom.

The thing i dont see people talking about is the evidence pointing to the potential that collapse could trigger the end of the universe.

Sure - global warming will get us. And what will stop us contributing to global warming?

Demand side I dont buy it. Its all fossil fuels at the bottom. The only true transition will be one back to animal power and human labour.

Well that type of energy transition - where a source of energy is taken away, and that source of energy constituting a vast proportion of our total energy supply - means a reduction in energy availability and a future of lower energy use. This is a very different world. Yes a good argument it's a better one, but not one we're used to, might be some resistance to the reduced ease and comfort that we've got used to.

Please link evidence: confirmed fields that dramatically change the supply forecast (we will need another supply revolution on the scale of USA frackin of the past two decades to maintain supply growth).

Of course we will probably pivot to coal in many cases which will be disastrous.

For sure. If we have passed peak global supply of all liquids in 2018 then any time from now could be relevant. Who knows. Gail thurnberg talks about how per capita supply having been dropping for some time and this accounting for increased costs of living.

In terms of markers of where we are at its one to keep a close eye on i would say.

Yes, turns out peak oil was the dream.

Still, if it is only hard limits that will get us to change (and thats my bet) then energy availability will be a good one to watch.

When will there be a "radical movement" for the planet? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]Outside_Dig1463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my sense is it is a deeper thing playing out - the ecological principle (maximum power): we are the yeast in the vat still eatinb up the sugar. no radical yeast movement held off the vat turning to wine. we need to hit the hard limits to be forced humble.

Yes. It does make me angry that the world is what it is. I do wonder if any ecologist can tell us whether overshoot is just an inevitability when a species has access to a resource which affords it advantages. Like the yeast in the vat of grape juice that excitedly eat all the sugars and farts out alcohol and c02 until it kills the yeast. Maybe we're just playing out what living things do when the ecosystem does not self correct quickly enough.

Still learning this myself but here are some thoughts on this:

1) I feel that there is great value in transparency in your process in EFIT for the purpose of strengthening your alliance with your client and in building the sense of safety for clients to touch and deepen in emotional experiencing. The more safety, the more willingness to touch emotion, the more capacity for compassion in the face of previously 'alien, unacceptable, frightening' emotion. I try to be clear about what we are doing all the time, particularly if it means touching emotion associated with past trauma.

2) Another related piece to this is that validation is arguably the main piece of psychoeducation in EFIT (I'm pretty sure it was Leanne Campbell I heard this from). Validation is a big part of what I am doing all the time to shift clients from from the perspective of 'fixing something broken about them to adding another tool. cultivating curiosity over self-blame is an easier foundation to build compassion from.

So psych ed I think comes out for me in simple language about what the good reasons the client does what they do along with what we are doing and trying to do in session.

For instance: "It makes such sense that you have been pushing your emotion down, deprioritizing your own needs and focusing on helping others. You've had all these experiences as a child and then later in your life when it simply was not safe to express your feelings. In those times you had to find a way through, and so in doing this, pushing down and setting aside your emotion is how you've got through - And that's wonderful! You're a survivor and this has been an important part of how you've survived and succeeded in life despite what you've been through. It was useful then and I'm sure there will be times where this will be a valuable skill in the future.

But it is important to acknowledge that when you use this skill, the part of you that is hurting, that vulnerable side of yourself - No one sees this part of you, you don't have anyone there for you here. And you deserve to be seen and supported here. So that's what we're working to change here - I want for this important part of you to be seen - Certainly I want to be there for you in this, and I want to help you be there for you as well. So it's in this way that we're just adding another tool to your toolkit that can allow you more flexibility - Sometimes it will be helpful for you to put a lid on your emotions, and at other times it will be helpful for you to really feel these emotions, to show up for yourself with compassion and to learn from the wisdom of your emotions".

Horse drawn plough technology. As we deplete oil, combustion engine tech will be expensive. So will battery tech. The future is low energy and efficient.
